Quote:Bosa is a monster. I never would have guessed he is a true sophomore. He should definitely be the first defensive lineman selected next year.
I really found the analysis provided by Hank Joness of Big Cat County on the Leo Fits for the Jags between Shane Ray, Randy Gregory and Dante Fowler to be quite enlightening. Perhaps it is just me, but I got the impression that the best long term fit for the Jags to fill the Leo position would be to draft Randy Gregory over Dante Fowler. So perhaps it is not so much of a slam dunk that the Jags select Dante Fowler with Pick 3.

Gregory is the obvious better fit, IMO.

Gregory has the physical traits that you look for, which is why for the longest time he was mocked as a top 3 player (and to us for our LEO). The problem is he didn't show that he can anchor the run (which is something the LEO needs to do, even in our scheme) all that well. This is why, IMO, a lot of people switched from him to Fowler, who is a little more well-rounded. Each of these rushers have traits they do well, but they all have legit question marks which makes it difficult to decide who is the best choice. Ray doesn't have the prototypical size and bend to play LEO. Gregory may be too light to play DE but doesn't have a lot of experience as a LB. Fowler is well-rounded, but does that limit his potential compared to Gregory? And then Beasley with his size.
To be fair Clowney and Mack both were criticized for different things too and had question marks but they were both great prospects. No one is perfect and these guys get overanalyzed

Hes a fine player but not the LEO fit we are in need of because he's much better with his interior rush than his edge rush. It would be nice to have a player like him, but the edge rush is so vitally important that it probably moves him down our board. Quote:That's why system and fit are so important. Especially with such a crowd of tweeners.Agreed. Now the question is which one does Caldwell think fits our defense the best or who can we build it around. Quote:Agreed. Now the question is which one does Caldwell think fits our defense the best or who can we build it around. Our run defense was 12th last year in terms of YPA. Our stats just look inflated bc teams ran the ball a lot against us in garbage time. Our pass rush was also fine too. The only difference is that our sack leader is 33 years old, and after him, our next guy up at the position has 7.5 career sacks. Pass rush has got to the be tipping point for our choice. Whoever that may be. IMO its Beasley. And when you consider that Cyp whiffed on a whole mess of tackles last year, our Run D could have been top-10 statistically. I really hope he progresses. I know Length is important, but how can anybody say that Gregory would be able to play in the trenches? He's 235 lbs... There's running backs in the league heavier than him. Heck, most QBs are heavier than him.
He's a good, but not a great athlete either. To me, he's got the biggest bust potential, simply because we don't even know if he can be effective AT ALL at a weight where he'll be asked to play (I'm thinking at least 255). You're talking 20 extra pounds he has to put on - how would that effect his explosiveness? I think that's why you saw him do a lot more linebacker drills on his pro-day. He realizes his weigh-in was so pathetic that people will question whether his best position is DE.

Quote:That's why system and fit are so important. Especially with such a crowd of tweeners. This is the best word (tweeners)for ALL the edge pass rushers. I am beginning to believe the Jags may just go BPA regardless of position (Not QB) Gregory,Ray and Beasley are just to small.Maybe Gregory could grow because of the build. Why was Dee Ford drafted at 21 when basically he is the same player as Ray and Beasley? Think about it? Especially with high floor players guaranteed to be sitting at our pick in either Williams/Beasley/Fowler.

And then im even warming up to WR @3...

I watch every Florida game and knew he causes a lot of havoc but I got bored and wanted to watch him only on the games I can find. He drops in to coverage a good bit but is very consistent when rushing the passer. Gonna do a few more when I get time

He's not a great or dominant pass rusher in my opinion. He has one move: speed rush. He barely uses his hands and doesn't bend that well
He reminds me of a guy we already have....Andre Branch. |
