Redskins name change

#21

It's the only name in sports literally based on the (perceived) color of a man's skin.

I really don't think it needs to go much further than that.  It's a horrible name.

This is exactly what it's about. I don't understand how anyone doesn't see this. The Blackskins, Yellowskins, Brownskins, etc would not be tolerated. Neither would the BigNoses for that matter. It's all the same.

I am glad to have an opportunity to discuss this with a person I highly respect. I know if you feel it is offensive, then it isn't just words to you, there is substance that you believe in.

Can I ask what part of skin color is offensive? Skin color ... I don't get why skin color is offensive. I am looking for someone to explain to me why I should find skin color offensive. Is this one of those things that are a given, and I should just accept it without understanding it?

I know it has to be my narrow mind keeping me from understanding why skin color is offensive. If I were racist would I then understand why skin color is offensive? I ask with nothing but respect, because it seems so illogical to me.

In my opinion, the idea of whether or not people are offended by the name is completely irrelephant. It's the fact that Marshall intended it to be racist and insulting is the key part. The man was diabolical in some of his machinations, and it's downright scary some of the things that he did. Just go look up his "Children's Foundation" if you would like further evidence.

Just because my noodle-arm self couldn't bruise a tomato swinging a full punch doesn't mean that it's no longer wrong. The name was meant to insult, to denigrate, to hurt. It needs to go away.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

I don't think he had anything to do with my highschool ... whoever he is.

When I say Redskins, I am not swinging a noodle arm, to me it is a word of honor. I thought I said that.

I thought you typed it, but whatever; I've been wrong before. As I wrote, I don't think it's all that important how the title is perceived. What matters to me is that it was meant as an insult.

Just rebrand the team, and be done with it. All they have to do with the name change is top the pelicans name, which a 5 year old could probably do.

Intent.

There has to be intent. I still don't understand why skin color is offensive.

The name should stay the same.  The fact that "Blackskins" "Whiteskins" "Purpleskins" and what not wouldn't be accepted today doesn't matter, because those names aren't ingrained in the history of a team.

The Redskins are a brand.  The name is synonymous with Football today, not racism.  There's also a British Ice Hockey team called the Redskins.  The football team is obviously more famous.

The only way the name changes is if people stop buying tickets and merchandise.  Simple as that really.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

From the way I understand it, it's not a reference to the skin color. It's actually a reference to the act of scalping that was so rampant in those days. As in "Ha! I ripped your scalp off! Now your skin is all red with blood and stuff!"

As I said, it needs to go away. Dan Snyder is more than capable of making money off of a billion dollar asset.

You are wrong about it.  It is an offensive name to some Native Americans. It is the same as calling an African-American an N word.

Just as the N word might not seem offensive to you if you are not black, the same is true with the word Redskins.

You basically cant get it if you are not Native American.  If you are and it doesnt offend you great that still doesnt change the fact that it does in fact

offend other Native Americans.  Yet again same thing maybe the N word doesnt offend some black people and they call each other it all the time

as a sign of respect or whatever but those that it does offend, it offends them greatly & you certaintly wouldnt have the Washington N word (if you know what I mean) sponsered by Popeyes so why would you continue to support Daniel Snyders racist stance on the team?

He would actually profit more by changing it as fans would want the new team logos and apparel.

In the end I feel the team will change to the BraveHearts as it is not solely owned by Daniel Snyder and his partners apparently dont have the same stance on the matter as he does.

It needs to go away because of history? I think that is the point you are making. I thought it was because skin color today, I thought people were feeling offended now is the reason someone wants to change it.

What does Popeyes have to do with anything? or the N word? ... The intent of the N word is derogatory, that doesn't make skin color derogatory.

That's my take on it anyway. Regardless of people being insulted by it, it was meant as derogatory.

So then I should not take offense to being called "blackie" or "darkie," and likewise, you should not take offense to "whitey?" (assuming you are white).

Recall the Eddie Murphy film "48 Hours" when Murphy's character goes into this...country/western themed bar.

The bartender offers to pour Murphy's character a "black Russian." Coincidence?

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

In that case, it has failed. How can skin color be derogatory?

If a cop asks me to identify a perpetrator, I will use the color of his skin when applicable ... Should I not?

In the case that it is. I have a friend who won't even be in the same room as Washington paraphenalia because of the team name. And it's pretty easy to use skin color as derogatory when you add connotation and disdain as you say it, isn't it? I mean, I know that I do it all the time, but not too many people speak in flat, emotionless tones.

I think they should change the name.  It's confussing.  They should be called "The D.C. Redskins"  That would make more sense.
