WTH?!? Adrian Peterson

Quote:Fun fact: AP and Poz are both 30 years old. There are linemen and other players at other positions who are highly effective beyond 30. Running back is historically not one of those positions, especially when you're talking about investing $15 million per year hoping he'll be the guy bucking history. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:Actually, the logic is extremely sound. Even the best backs in the history of the league hit a wall, and when they do, it happens quickly. He's not unique in any way from others who have played before him who saw their skills erode after they crossed that 30 year old threshold. He MIGHT get production over the next 3 years, or he might not. There's no guarantee, and with that contract, there has to be some level of expectation that he'll be on the field producing. For what it would cost to bring him here, we could draft one of the top backs in the draft this year and have an actual fix instead of hoping AP can hold it together. Sorry, it's a no brainer for me. I'd call the bolded statement, 100% on dead to rights accurate.. For a normal RB, that is.. AP is far from normal.. Quote:I'd call the bolded statement, 100% on dead to rights accurate.. I think this all comes down to what Minnesota wants for him. If they want a 3rd or higher? Heck no. If they want a late 4th or lower, then it's worth consideration. Although, his pay may be too high a price in the long run. Right now, we aren't worried about it because of our cap space. But we must consider the future of that space as well. As our players get better, they will get more and more expensive to keep. Which is why winning consistently year after year is so hard in the NFL. I'm not opposed to going after him simply because of his age. He's worth the risk as long as it doesn't cost our future; which is what Minnesota sounds like they want for him. So, I doubt he leaves Minnesota.
GO JAGS!!
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

Also, at the end of the day, I don't think he's going anywhere, so all of this talk about trading high draft picks for him is pointless. Never argue with idiots. That's not going to happen unless a team truly believes they're 1 running back away from a title. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:I think people are putting way too much stock into the fact that AP is somehow superhuman. He's not. Lol what? This is a stretch, even for you. No one is calling him superhuman. We are simply saying that Peterson is a generational talent, so his trajectory should be compared to other generational talents at the position. It isn't rocket science. Also, FBT, you never answered my question. Over/Under 3,000 yards for AP the next three season? I'll take the over, you name the wager.

History supports my premise. It doesn't back yours up at all. As far as this new "generational talent" thing goes, pump the brakes. Being a "generational talent" doesn't make him immune to anything. Talent can't overcome physical limitations as the body starts to fail, and Peterson is due. Quote:Also, FBT, you never answered my question. Over/Under 3,000 yards for AP the next three season? That doesn't make him a must have for this team, especially if we're giving up a draft pick or multiple picks to land an aging $15 million veteran. With the improvements on our offensive line and the scheme itself, if we secure one of the better backs in the draft, we could see equal production for what? 1/3 or less of the cost? Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Quote:Who are some recent generational RBs? Do you understand what I mean by generational talent? I mean he is one of the best RBs of all time. I don't see why Peterson can't sustain success into his 30s the way guys like Emmit Smith, Curtis Martin, Walter Payton, Tony Dorsett, etc. did. We show less advertisements to registered users. Being a "generational talent" doesn't make him immune to anything. Talent can't overcome physical limitations as the body starts to fail, and Peterson is due. I didn't say that being a generational makes him immune to anything. I said that being a generational talent greatly increases his odds of being able to produce for the next few years. Why didn't work horse backs like Payton, Smith, Martin, and Dorsett hit a wall at 30? Are they "superhuman"? Do you agree that it makes more sense to compare Peterson's trajectory to former elite RBs instead of mid and low tier backs? The elite backs can lose a step or two and still be very, very good backs. If an average back loses a step or 2 at age 30, he becomes below average. Surely we can both agree on this, right?
Quote:You might want to check on Dorsett...dropped off a cliff at 32. I said into his his 30s. Tony Dorsett Age 30: 1,648 total yards in 16 games. Age 31: 1,756 total yards in 16 games. Age 32: 1,011 total yards in 13 games. Why can't Peterson follow a similar trajectory?
FWIW, I'm not even for bringing Peterson in, especially if it costs us a 4th or higher. His salary hit is enough that we shouldn't have to give up another high asset. I just get annoyed by the faux logic that every athlete is molded the same and therefor all hit the same wall at the same times.

Take an honest look at those stats for each one of the RBs you listed. Their average RUSHING yardage dropped off significantly after and into their 30s, with exception to Martin. Too big a price tag to pay for perhaps a year of production. AP also has the extended time out of the league against him and his body. You put your team behind the curve chasing has beens. I would want a new guy with higher ceiling, lower cost, and years of production.

I'm saying that he can follow that similar regression trajectory and still be a very good RB, much like those other guys were. I don't think he hits a wall and is suddenly not a top 5 RB anymore. Again, read through my posts, man. I'm not advocating for trade Peterson. Personally, I don't consider RB a premium position and this is loaded with talent at the position. I'm just pointing out that flaws in comparing Peterson's expected product to how low and average tier RBs produced at 30. Quote:Do you understand what I mean by generational talent? Actually, your 'generational talent' reference is flawed anyway. It's ridiculous. You're calling someone a 'generational talent' because they had an extended career. So if Peterson get's hurt in pres-season and never plays another down, is he no longer a generational talent because he didn't have an extended career? Sorry, your logic is flawed, no matter how much you argue about it. ![]() |
