Is America's Pastime Dying a Slow Death?
|
Quote:You are wrong. The Jaguars were all over the place those years, especially 98/99. Thats not how I remember it. Perhaps you are speaking from a local perspective? I remember being often frustrated at the lack of coverage the Jags received even back then. They were one of the best teams in the sport and should have gotten more publicity. Quote:There's a LOT more scoring in baseball than in hockey and soccer. The average baseball score for a nine inning game is nine total runs, so you're looking at 5-4, 6-3, 8-1, 7-2 etc. There is more scoring on average than hockey or soccer, but the pace of the games make it very interesting. I do think that is one of the main factors of the decline. It's just a slow game. When it comes to MLB I can only watch when the Pirates are playing. I can sit down and watch just about any football game, and most professional soccer games. Just can't do that when it comes to baseball.

Quote: IMO, most soccer fans born in the USA are largely phony anyway. Oh...you're still clinging to this? Cool.
Quote:Soccer...lol.....how anyone can bash baseball for being boring and then claim to be a SOCCER fan?!?!?....rofl.... Catch me up. Is soccer more interesting if you're not born in the USA? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Catch me up. Is soccer more interesting if you're not born in the USA? Soccer is more part of the fabric/ culture of other countries. Soccer fans born in the USA just reak of hipster wannabe's, to me. JMO. Quote:Soccer is more part of the fabric/ culture of other countries. Most soccer fans in the U.S. are passionate about the game, and absorb everything they can about the sport, be it a domestic or foreign product. The problem is there aren't enough of them to support a league that can compete with the European and South American clubs for premium players
If something can corrupt you, you're corrupted already.
- Bob Marley ![]() Quote:IMO, part of baseball's steady decline in popularity has to do with big market teams constantly owning the league and having all the success. WHen markets like Pittsburgh & Kansas City have to go several decades between legit world series chances, and the NY & Boston markets have that basically every year, then you have a problem with your sport. Oh cool, the 436th version of "Stay Off My Lawn" and "It's All A Conspiracy". And I love that "mark my words". You forgot the 'sonny boy" ending. Do you correspond often with Jessie Ventura?

It's been slow, but it's happening. Seattle outdrew some EPL clubs when it comes to attendance. Several others are nipping at those numbers. The MLS, whatever it is they've been doing, are doing it right.

You really have to be into the numbers and situations to stay in the game. However, it is interesting to note that other than the seven inning stretch, the game never really stops. Not so with any of the other major sports.

I played for a while, understand the game, but it's just so boring at times unless you have a rooting interest. Even then, it can get rather dull.

Quote:well, it stops between innings Not really. If only for the players to run off the field. The guy at the plate usually will stay on the field. This lasts seconds. Quote:That's true. Yeah, I can understand. I'm a sport nerd and really get into the stats and stuff, so I love it. Baseball is all about stats lol. Also that's why I like playing the fantasy games.

Quote:Ironic, considering I think you're a phony Jags fan. LOL....yeah, phony....19 seasons of phony I guess.... Quote:Not really. If only for the players to run off the field. Thats why I love fantasy sports.....to be honest, winning those leagues is more about being good at math than anything. Thats my take anyway.
Quote:LOL....yeah, phony....19 seasons of phony I guess.... :wacko:So you think its stupid for someone to call you a phony fan? How do you think all those soccer fans feel when you said it?

Quote:Soccer is more part of the fabric/ culture of other countries. Soccer fans born in the USA just reak of hipster wannabe's, to me. JMO. I'm not sure I'd call myself a soccer fan. But I've followed WNT for years, and have been watching some Premier league this season. In the end, the less you know about something, the more boring it is. Most soccer fans would call NFL boring (it does take a whole three hours to play a one hour game after all), but they'd probably like it if they understood it more. But then again, why would they try to learn more about something they think is boring?
Quote:So you think its stupid for someone to call you a phony fan? How do you think all those soccer fans feel when you said it? Its my opinion. And IIRC, I said "most" not all. There are definitely wannabe's amongst them though. Quote:It's too bad you dont win many from what I've seen.... I guess you aren't paying attention then. Best record in Trav's league right now along with most points. ....and I did it while being besieged with injuries to top picks, and without pilfering the bottom feeders of the league in lopsided trades. I'm great!
Quote:Its my opinion. And IIRC, I said "most" not all. There are definitely wannabe's aomongst them though. Probably not nearly as many as you think. I know plenty of die-hard soccer fans. They are mostly young. They get up early on Saturday to watch Euro leagues. They understand the rules of the game. Alot of them play in adult leagues. None are what I would call a "hipster wannabe". |
