Is America's Pastime Dying a Slow Death?

Quote:You are wrong.  The Jaguars were all over the place those years, especially 98/99.

Thats not how I remember it. Perhaps you are speaking from a local perspective? I remember being often frustrated at the lack of coverage the Jags received even back then. They were one of the best teams in the sport and should have gotten more publicity.

Quote:Baseball is declining because it's slow and low scoring.

And old.

It's never been my thing, and I'm glad we're done with it for another year.

Quote:There's a LOT more scoring in baseball than in hockey and soccer.

Oh yeah. Absolutely. I drove up to orlando to see the Marlins play the Braves in spring training so I could a Disney/Baseball day, having a beer and sitting in the sun.
The average baseball score for a nine inning game is nine total runs, so you're looking at 5-4, 6-3, 8-1, 7-2 etc. There is more scoring on average than hockey or soccer, but the pace of the games make it very interesting. I do think that is one of the main factors of the decline. It's just a slow game.

When it comes to MLB I can only watch when the Pirates are playing. I can sit down and watch just about any football game, and most professional soccer games. Just can't do that when it comes to baseball.

I loved Baseball growing up, played Baseball for a lot of years. I was a huge Reds fan, as they were locally advertised/broadcast in Indianapolis. (The Big Red Machine)

Now, I rarely even pause on a game while channel surfing, yet alone go to a game. I do understand the nuances, and exciting aspect of baseball as a competitive sport, but still can't seem to have the time to enjoy it any longer.

Catch me up.  Is soccer more interesting if you're not born in the USA?

Just another stereotype born of ignorance. Most soccer fans in the U.S. are passionate about the game, and absorb everything they can about the sport, be it a domestic or foreign product. The problem is there aren't enough of them to support a league that can compete with the European and South American clubs for premium players

Quote:IMO, part of baseball's steady decline in popularity has to do with big market teams constantly owning the league and having all the success. WHen markets like Pittsburgh & Kansas City have to go several decades between legit world series chances, and the NY & Boston markets have that basically every year, then you have a problem with your sport.

If football continues the way its going, it will be following in baseball's footsteps.

The NFL, despite measures put in to help create a level playing field, big market teams still rule...and don't let it fool you - the NFL wants it this way....its no "coincidence" that the Jaguars never get good air time by the networks and coverage - they save that for the big market moneymaking teams.

There's no real "parity".

The only reason small markets like Pittsburgh and Green Bay are tolerated/ endorsed even is because those teams have built up such a following. If those markets had teams like the Jags without the "history" and fanfare,,,,they'd be getting similar treatment, too.

Its all corrupt. All about greedy moneeeeeeeey, and pulling the wool over the peoples eyes to give the guise of "parity" when there really is none.

The NFL at one time - under the Rozelle leadership and many of the old-guard owners DID care about parity because they saw the bigger picture and parity helped elevate the sport to the height it has reached.....but now, all the new-guard cares about is the short sighted bottom line and big markets. The NFL will follow the same path as baseball in time if this continues, mark my words.

Oh cool, the 436th version of "Stay Off My Lawn" and "It's All A Conspiracy".

And I love that "mark my words". You forgot the 'sonny boy" ending.

The worm has been turning. It's been slow, but it's happening. Seattle outdrew some EPL clubs when it comes to attendance. Several others are nipping at those numbers. The MLS, whatever it is they've been doing, are doing it right.

I can understand how people can find it slow. You really have to be into the numbers and situations to stay in the game. However, it is interesting to note that other than the seven inning stretch, the game never really stops. Not so with any of the other major sports.

That's true. It stops without actually stopping. I played for a while, understand the game, but it's just so boring at times unless you have a rooting interest. Even then, it can get rather dull.

Ironic, considering I think you're a phony Jags fan.

Not really. If only for the players to run off the field. The guy at the plate usually will stay on the field. This lasts seconds.

Yeah, I can understand. I'm a sport nerd and really get into the stats and stuff, so I love it. Baseball is all about stats lol.

Also that's why I like playing the fantasy games.

So you think its stupid for someone to call you a phony fan?  How do you think all those soccer fans feel when you said it?

I'm not sure I'd call myself a soccer fan.  But I've followed WNT for years, and have been watching some Premier league this season.  In the end, the less you know about something, the more boring it is.  Most soccer fans would call NFL boring (it does take a whole three hours to play a one hour game after all), but they'd probably like it if they understood it more.  But then again, why would they try to learn more about something they think is boring?

Its my opinion. And IIRC, I said "most" not all. There are definitely wannabe's amongst them though.

I guess you aren't paying attention then.

Best record in Trav's league right now along with most points.

....and I did it while being besieged with injuries to top picks, and without pilfering the bottom feeders of the league in lopsided trades.

I'm great!

Probably not nearly as many as you think. I know plenty of die-hard soccer fans. They are mostly young. They get up early on Saturday to watch Euro leagues. They understand the rules of the game. Alot of them play in adult leagues. None are what I would call a "hipster wannabe".
