At no point is anyone advocating having bad offensive lines... the question is whether a premium left tackle is vital?

Is it more important to have an all-pro LT but also have 2 horrible players on your O-line?  Would you rather have that than 5 average players on the O-line?  I don't know, not sure.  That's why the question has been raised.

 

There have been recent examples of QBs performing well despite having a horrible O-line.  There has also been instances where a bad O-line cripples the entire offense.   I think that I would rather have 5 average offensive lineman than Tony Boselli if he has to line up next to Will freaking Rackley and the 35 year old Meester's of this world.

LT usually cover the QB's blindside, if he's dropping back to pass more, then the LT is even more important.

 

So in response to the original question you got all offended over, YES, it is still a premium position and very important to have a premium LT. A Premium LT doesn't mean the guy was drafted in the top 10 picks of the 1st round, it means he plays at a high level. So the answer to your question is still NO, Good QB's do not just require "average" olines, they need the extra time quality lines give them to deliver the ball.

I watched the entire Ravens/Steelers game and he played well in their loss. I guess that doesn't count much since the Pats just lit up the Steelers with 55 points.

Monroe actually played well yesterday. He isn't the problem on the Ravens offensive line. Osemele is out, Yanda is playing hurt and Gradkowski (probably spelled it wrong) is worse than Meester. Monroe is also better than Oher by quite a bit. He's actually their best o-lineman.

Baltimore's line has played horribly lately culminating in possibly their worst game of the season yesterday (as far as line play goes). Rice was held to a ridiculously low yardage total and it was because there was simply nowhere to run. 

 

With Baltimore losing, they now sit at 3-5, which makes those 4th & 5th round picks that we received reside in the upper half of those particular rounds. Even if Balt finishes the rest of the season at a reasonable 4-4 record, those picks would still be in the upper half of those rounds.

Related to what you mentioned,    Kelechi Osemele was placed on I.R. today.       With C Matt Birk retired and at a much lower weight than what he played at,   that's two interior Offensive Lineman from the Ravens Super Bowl winning run that are clearly out of the picture the rest of this season:

I agree, I still think they could have managed the trade better and got better compensation, but I am just trying to look at the situation as half-full as I can at this point. The more the Ravens lose, the better it will be for us.

I think you're reaching a bit here. If anything Monroe elevated his game against elite tackles. I distinctly remember him stonewalling Jared Allen last year and JJ Watt never had a above average game going against him (Guy Whimper is another story). He year in and year out held his own against the Mathis/Freeney combo with Freeney schooling him only in his rookie year.

Our Eugene Monroe?  You mean that dude that was our LT that we traded for a 4th and a 5th?  Man I hope we get some good payoff for that trade. 

 

Don't care if we got the 1st pick in the 4th and 1st pick in the 5th guaranteed, it was still a head scratching move---AT THE TIME IT WAS MADE

 

With that said, if Caldwell can play his cards right and it turns into peices that ensure our franchise I will laude it as a genius move.  As of now...  I'm still scratching my head.

Agreed. Monroe would come to play when the competition was at its best, although on the flip side he can be somewhat inconsistent in pass protection. What I like best about him though was his run blocking dominance, and that's something we're simply never going to get from Cam Bradfield.


 

I do think Monroe is better than many in this thread are crediting him for being, but I also think the trade was largely based on Caldwell's fears about being able to retain him. Its been speculated that it might take the franchise tag to get him to stay, but the tag for OLs next year is expected to be around $10 mil.
