If the police just want to question him why is he in such danger of not being drafted at all? I mean I don't profess to know anything about college players but this guy was pegged to go in the 1st round just a few days ago. It would seem to me that he would be worth a pick later in the draft right? I know it's a gamble but if he's not a suspect in the murder isn't the gamble worth it?

He's probably completely innocent, but until totally sure, no team will take a gamble on him.

I read somewhere that he's not going to talk to the police until after the draft.   If he has nothing to hide, or if he is in the clear on this, why didn't he rush right down there when this came up and clear everything up?   Instead, he's willing to go undrafted rather than talk to the police right away.  

 

Big, huge, red flag.

The police & detectives have a process.  There's not enough evidence to arrest him right now so they take steps to question him and get some initial statements.  Later, as they gather data and evidence and statements from anyone and everyone, they will put the pieces of the puzzle together and determine whether charges should be brought against him.

 

Let's put it this way though, when a wife goes missing, 95% of the time the hubby killed her.  When a dude is laying in bed with a bullet through his head, 95% of the time the wife, jealous gf, or estranged husband killed him.  When a pregnant gf winds up dead, 95% of the time the boyfriend played a role in the murder.

If I am an NFL GM interested in Lael Collins, I am sending several private investigators to Louisiana to try to find out what the situation is, because at some point in the draft be becomes worth the gamble, especially if you find out he has an iron-clad alibi.  

 

Suppose it is 50-50 whether he gets in trouble over this?   That's a 50-50 chance you have to cut him before training camp.   AND, a 50-50 chance you get a starting tackle.  At what level is it worth the gamble?   Fourth round?

Louisiana cops either fully back LSU players or hit them hard. The system is taking a [BLEEP] on this kid. He may not be entirely a victim but if or if not the kid is his he is still hurting from losing his ex girlfriend. Plus millions of dollars.

That's really strange. I'm pretty wary of the criminal justice system and I'm a big advocate on using our legal safeguards, but this situation is a bit different. If he has absolutely nothing to do with this, and has no knowledge on what went down, he has so much incentive to speak immediately. He should be shouting his innocence from the rooftops. Who knows what's happening behind the scenes.

id use a 6th or 7th on him. thats it.

Yeah, the fact that Baton Rouge police couldn't reach him for a couple of days to question him makes me think he was avoiding them.  At least he's decided to head home to deal with this, and he's scheduled to meet with them, but it won't happen until after the draft.  If he's cleared, someone is going to get an absolute steal.

If he's available in the 5th round you have toconsider taking him, too talented of a player. The risk at that point of the draft is definitely worth the reward, you can slide him into the LG spot and have an absolutetly nasty offensive line.

Not sure about as high as the 5th round but at some point late in the draft he becomes worth a gamble, unless teams have more info that would make him undraftable

As high as the 5th? How many 5th round picks have the potential of Collins? He's absolutely worth the gamble at that point in the draft.

If I'm spending a draft pick on him, I'm looking at rd. 6 or 7.  Ultimately, we don't know what his status is going to be, and rolling the dice by drafting him any higher than that would be too much of a risk, even with his talent.  Once you get to those last two rounds, you can take that risk and if it doesn't pan out, oh well.  If it does, you've gotten on of the steals of the draft.
