His rise and popularity IMO, are indicative of a weak draft (at the top) this year.

 

The "drop" of Williams backs that as well.  As does the lack of trades early in the first.

 

For the most part, folks stayed put and selected whoever fell.

 

Rams had Gurley (even with injury) rated so high above everyone else they said they put his name on the ceiling of the draft room.

 

IMO the draft is getting over-analyzed.  Teams take a look at their slot, look at their needs, and fill need with who they think will be available.  I don't think some teams have a board in the traditional sense, where there's an order from first to last.  I think most just group dozens of guys together into round grades, and have maybe half a dozen preferences for likely selections, and maybe one or two (of any) "have to get" guys above them if they like them enough.

I think people are overrating his across the board mediocrity (aka versatility) on cutups as "oh well when he gets proper coaching" or "oh when he gets to focus on just one thing" or "but he's only 20!". I don't think it's that easy to project him, because he is so on the razor's edge athletically. I like his aggression, motor, size, etc...


However, I worry that the main way he won in college, inside counter moves, won't work in the NFL against OTs that won't overset so often. I think Fowler won predominately by being schemed into pressure with his inside blitzes, or taking advantage of poor college OT technique. It's easy to see how Beasley's skill set is going to translate to the NFL game. I don't think it is that easy to see with Fowler.


All of that said, I wouldn't characterize myself as being "So anti-Fowler" as that child Achilles said. All I ever said is that there were a handful of guys that would have been better picks. Fowler belonged in the middle third of the 1st round. If 10 picks lower than he went = "So anti-Fowler" then whatever.

And in his grades he gave a c+ to the fowler pick and a b- to the yeldon pick.


So his nightmare scenario came true and they grade out to either a b- or c+ average depending on if you round up or down.


I guess that's a nightmare we can all live with.

I already posted this before, but dude, JJ Watt is absolutely the biggest and fastest. He is 5 (!!!) standard deviations from the average DL athlete. 99.999999%tile. The next JJ Watt athlete should statistically come around in about 300 years. He is every superlative adjective available.

I think you missed the point of my post. JJ Watt was not that when he was a walk on in college. He worked to get to were he is. That guy has a motor that doesn't stop and desire that won't fade. Those are traits that you can't measure. That is why he is who he is. Some people have the ability (Moss) then some people have the ethic (Watt).
