Patriots signed CB Derek Cox, formerly of the Chargers.


The Patriots are searching at corner after losing Darrelle Revis in free agency, and cutting Brandon Browner. Cox, 28, appeared to be one of the NFL's most promising young corners in 2012 with Jacksonville. He signed a big contract with San Diego the following year, and immediately fell off the map.

If there was a perfect scenario to revive a career, New England is the perfect fit.

i hope he turns it around. always liked him as a player, inconsistency and injuries ran him out of here but hes got the talent.

I think the time away from football could work to Derek Cox's advantage.  If Cox is finally over the injuries that have plagued him and he still has most of his ability that enabled him to succeed with the Jaguars,   then he indeed could revive his career in New England.

Yup.  The Jags traded a 7th rd pick in 2009 and a 2nd round pick in 2010 for that pick.

 

The 7th round pick turned out to be Julian Edelman.

The 7th round pick turned out to be Julian Edelman. 

 

It shows how unpredictable a draft can be.   The success rate for teams collectively with 7th Round picks is modest at best.   It's fair to say that the vast majority of 7th Round picks in the last 30 years or so didn't come close to the career that Julian Edelman is having.    There's no telling whether Edelman was even on the Jaguars radar screen.    Being that Edelman was drafted after well over 200 players were taken in 2009,  every team,  even the Patriots,  missed the boat on him.

At one point for a period of time,  I felt the Jaguars were getting good trade value based on how Derek Cox was performing for the Jaguars and what it cost to get him.   Unfortunately for the team and player,  injuries prevented Cox from not only taking the next step but caused the team to go in another direction when Cox became an UFA.    That certainly turned out to be a great decision based on the contract the Chargers gave Cox and his struggles that followed with all the teams he's been with since.

I find this signing really rather odd the more I think about it. Belichik has always seemed to me that he prefers committed football players over talented ones, with some glaring exceptions of course (See, R. Moss). And I remember D. Cox being benched more than one time for what was essentially a motivational tactic.

 

Maybe Cox will be productive in New England, but I have my doubts that's for sure.

The Pats actually drafted Rob Gronkowski in 2010 with the Jaguar pick (#42) from the Cox trade.  So they got Edelman & Gronk for the 3rd-round pick we used for Cox - and now they've got Cox. 

 

Still, I think he's a longshot to make the team.

I don't know if he's a long shot to make the roster.  He'll be one to win a starting job unless he somehow manages to play up to his potential, something he's failed to do with his previous teams.
