Looking for TV tech opinions
|
So I'm going to spoiling myself in the next couple of days. I'm purchasing a new 60" flat screen but looking for opinions. I have my eye on two different brands (RCA and Panasonic) but one is LED and the other is LCD.. Which is better? I've done some internet searching and found pro's and con's for both but was looking for board member opinions as well.

1080p LED or even look into the 4k LEDs. Sony films everything in 4k now and it looks amazing. I have the Samsung 65" 4k curved and I love it.
Have you seen my baseball?

I have a 58" Panasonic Viera (LCD) and the picture looks better than our neighbors Samsung.
We both bought ours ~ 5 years ago so things change but I'd go back to Panasonic if I was on the buying block once again. Quote:I plug mine in. I think my clicker is broke. It changes channels and all, but it doesn't go 'click'. On the topic, I've looked at a few curved screen TVs and for me it's not worth the price. The Sony 4k thing does look amazing and I think I'd rather have that than a curved screen.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Quote:I think my clicker is broke. It changes channels and all, but it doesn't go 'click'.Agreed. 4K is the future. Curved displays are a gimmick. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
The problem with 4K is there's nothing out yet that supports it, correct? Everything is still 1080P. I suppose a new line of disks will be coming out soon to replace blu rays, but I've not seen anything yet.
Get the LED. Its a much better picture and they are usually thinner as well.

Curved displays are a gimmick...but they look cool and it was on sale and cheaper than the regular flat screen.
And Netflix has some stuff in 4k.

What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is agoin' on here???

Granted, I didn't pay it a whole lot of attention at the time, but it looked to me like it would be awkward to watch unless you were directly lined up in front of it. Like if you were sitting a little off to the side, you wouldn't be able to see as well. Is that the case?

I'm pretty sure most of the top streaming sites have 4k content, like Amazon and Youtube. Anything shot on film can be digitized to 4k, and any film shot digitally is either 2k or 4k, so most films can easily be offered by streaming sites at a higher resolution that 1080p. The future of disc media is kind of sketchy, and the biggest hurdle for streaming 4k is bandwidth. HD requires about 2-3 Mbps to stream, and 4k requires around 15-16 Mbps. That's over 5x the bandwidth which maxes out a lot of people's internet speeds. The other problem is that ISPs were already trying to throttle content at HD.
Quote:I figured I'd point it out in case anyone else missed it!! Quite the opposite actually.

I would go for a Panasonic 100 times out of 100 vs an RCA product, regardless of LED or LCD.
As far as LCD, LED, 1080 vs 4k... balance your budget with what you see in the showroom and read from reviews (CNET, etc.) One thing I would certainly go for is SmartTV. All new TVs should have it. I would avoid those that do not or spend the little extra for the comparable model that does have it, as even the cheapest TVs have that technology now. I would stick to solid, leading current brand names like Samsung and Panasonic. I have a Visio as well, but not my primary living room unit that's very good. However, my mother has a cheap Visio that I'm not as nearly impressed with. I would certainly avoid off brands and old brands that have gone downhill like RCA and Zenith. They may do fine for a guest bed, etc... but not something I would rely on for my workhorse/living room TV etc. I would stay away from any brand's cheapest entry model, though, good or bad brand.

Well, that changes things! You're right thought about the bandwidth thingie-ma-hoo. I have issues sometimes streaming if it's a 1080P via VUDU sometimes. I would never be able to handle the 4K if it requires all that.
Also, I wouldn't get an RCA at all. I'm sure they're fine and use the same guts as other brands, but it's just a personal bias. I like Samsung or LG. I had a pani once and had huge problems with it. This was eon's ago, but I have a long memory and won't ever do that again. I've had a sony and it was fine too, but I still prefer the LG or Samsung.
What a lot of people fail to realize is that HD is filmed in 2K...so if your TV is only 1080...1080 is the most you'll get out of it. With 4k at least you see 2k picture quality.
