Quote:I don't get on what grounds they suspended the kid? The public "education" system is full of power hungry bureaucrats  looking to only teach children to obey authority at all cost.

Maybe the Principle was listening to "Welcome to the Machine" and got all authoritative.......

Quote:What we don't know is the rule regarding bags/purses while in class. The story doesn't say what it is. Maybe they have a rule that all bags/purses are to be next to them on the floor while in class. Not getting the whole story here I think.

From the article (Updated)

However, he said all students, whether female or male, are prevented from having bags, purses, satchels and backpacks in the core classrooms like English and math. The bags must be stored in lockers during class time, he said.

So he wasn't being singled out and mistreated like some originally thought? Go figure. Not sure why so many people are so quick to feel they are being treated right and stand up for rebellious teens.

I would guess that it's because he's doing something other than the social norm and got suspended for it, and the article originally didn't mention anything but "there was no mention of purses in the code of conduct" (or something of the sort).

No Backpacks in the core classrooms?  That sounds like a pretty silly rule.  If it's equally enforced, then nobody will (or should) get in trouble.  Though honestly I doubt if it had been a girl with a purse that got in trouble, that it wouldn't have made the news.  Still there are some pretty silly rules in schools.  My class protested a rule that dress for the Senior Dinner had to be 'business casual' and a student wasn't let in.  So we all sat it out.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

That's what the media does. They give out partial stories. Yet, people want to get in an uproar when they only hear the one side. As politically correct as the country has gotten, I'd find it hard to believe any school would suspend a child unless he or she deserved it by breaking one of the rules. Seems like every time there is a "first" kid who did this or that, we hear about it in the news. Then, you hear the crowd that says that it was wrong that that got disciplined for it. There are kids that are different in every school, that doesn't mean they all break the rules. for every one of these kids that try to make a statement, there a many others that can be who they are and still adhere to the rules.

Rules are rules wether silly or not. You break them, you pay the consequences. I wouldn't be surprised if a girl got suspended if she did that. A lot of schools are making the kids have see through backpacks for safety reasons. If they can't see through the purse and a weapon or other contraband can be hidden in it, then why would they be ok? Idk that schools rule on clear or mesh backpacks, maybe they allow all kinds. But if the rule is in place and he broke it...

Also, how many times do you see rule breakers at school or work? When I was at school I saw it often. I never ratted anyone out. But all it takes is one person to complain and then the child breaking the rules gets in trouble. For all we know, there could be a girl who would like to have her purse, sees this guy and says "hey, why can he do it and not me?"

Which I was kind of suspecting, but didn't see it written or said anywhere.

Another reason for no purses/backpacks is that kids constantly use it for anything but school purposes. Make up time, phone in and out, etc.
