That'll do Pete, that'll do.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
No chance he ever gets in. MLB could be without their hits leader, home run leader, and Cy Yung leader.

I never liked him either Rico, I never liked him either.

I still think it is odd he isnt in there. He is such an important figure in the annals of baseball. Maybe he bet on games, but clearly it didnt impact his play. He is the alltime hits leader. A record that may never be broken. Just seems odd that a kid could go to the Hall of Fame and not see anything about the alltime hits leader.
Maybe they'll wait for him to keel over before they admit him. Or maybe they never make him a member, but they should still recognize him in some fashion. The Hall of Fame is more than just the collection of the best ever players. It's the history of baseball. And Rose, good and bad, is one of the key figures of the sport. ________________________________________________ Scouting well is all that matters. Draft philosophy is all fluff. He never bet against his team, or at least there is no proof of that as of yet. I'd rather see him in the hall than the steroid taking cheats that will indubitably be honored by it at some point!
What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is agoin' on here???
actually he is in the hall of fame. (sort of)
ive been there and he has some stuff in there. he just hasn't been put in personally Quote:He never bet against his team, or at least there is no proof of that as of yet. I'd rather see him in the hall than the steroid taking cheats that will indubitably be honored by it at some point!Riiiiiight. He said he didn't gamble. Lied. He said he didn't gamble as a manager. Lied. He said he never gambled on baseball. Lied. He said he never gambled as a player. Lied. Naaaaaahhh. He never bet against his team. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. My view on Pete is that he did two of the things that professional athletes simply cannot be allowed to do; one of them you can legislate, the other you have to just hope that his head is on straight.
First off, he put the integrity and the competitive nature of the game in question. It's my belief that sports organizations cannot survive this if allowed to continue. If the casual fan has a question in his or her mind about whether or not a game is rigged, the sport ain't gonna be around long. The news that Rose bet on those games is damning evidence in even the most favorable light. The second thing he did was that he thought he was greater than the sport. Rose gave a lot to baseball, no doubt about that. But when he decided that he had done enough for the sport that the rules didn't apply to him, he put himself before baseball. That's something that I don't agree with.

I never believed Rose's claim he never bet on baseball while a player. Addictions don't work that way.
Baseball should just add a Rogue's Wing to their HoF. They could start it with Shoeless Joe Jackson, then fill it up with Rose and the 'roid users.
If something can corrupt you, you're corrupted already.

Quote:You think he wouldve just faded away out of the lime light by now. He's the all time hit leader....this arguement will never die. Quote:My view on Pete is that he did two of the things that professional athletes simply cannot be allowed to do; one of them you can legislate, the other you have to just hope that his head is on straight. In your first part, shouldn't steroids also fall into that category and can't one make the argument they have and are having a bigger impact on the game than Pete ever did.

Meh. Pete Rose should be judged based on what he did as a player. I have no doubt there are quite a few guys in the HOF who did the same thing. His punishment has been banishment from baseball for all these years. If that banishment is ever lifted, and he can get in on his merits as a player, more power to him. Do I think he belongs there? Nope. But, that doesn't mean he shouldn't at least get consideration if he's reinstated.
The interesting thing from that report is that it sounds like the new commissioner was probably not going to reinstate him, so it's a moot point. His degenerate gambling habits will relegate him to the same outhouse as Shoeless Joe Jackson. I honestly think that had he come forward when the allegations came out in the late 80's, odds are he would have been forgiven by now and probably would have gotten into the hall eventually. His ego got the better of him. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Quote:In your first part, shouldn't steroids also fall into that category and can't one make the argument they have and are having a bigger impact on the game than Pete ever did. I don't have a problem with that approach but I can see how the argument can be made that performance enhancement is making yourself a better player whereas betting on your own loss is making yourself less of a player and that distinction may be important.

Quote:He never bet against his team, or at least there is no proof of that as of yet. I'd rather see him in the hall than the steroid taking cheats that will indubitably be honored by it at some point! He also "only bet when he was a manager". Using the game in a perverse way is way more offensive to me than PED. People really blow steriods out of the water these days. Do you realize how many professional athletes are on some sort of PED? I'm guessing, but I want to say around 90%, if not all of them. Somewhere around only 20% of steroids can be detected in a drug test, my guess is they're all on them, and pretty much have to be. If not, they likely won't be around for long. As Phil Heath put it, fans don't want to pay to see average people compete. |
