The fourth-string back being placed on NFI tells you that an undrafted rookie will have a spot on the depth chart higher than two veterans whose roles have already been spelled out by the coach and GM? Wow, you're good at this.

 

Yeldon will start, Robinson and Gerhart will rotate behind him based on situation, Grant is a return man and fourth/fifth back if he makes the team. That's not to say he won't see spot duty on offense, but he won't have a bigger role than Robinson and Gerhart.

If Grant makes the team, it will be for his role as a returner.  Grant's designation as a RB will be similar to Zelenka's designation as a TE some years ago. Maybe, if he makes the roster, Grant could develop and become a participating RB "down the road", but I don't see it this year.

With Storm virtually off the roster, I'm starting to like Bernard's chances to make it as their 5th RB. The thing is, Olsen predicates his offense around being able to pound the ball up the middle, and that's something Pierce does well. With Pierce and Toby pounding away, and with Yeldon, Grant and Shoelace picking up the fancy big yards, they should be able to do some damage. If Olsen is able to run the ball, everything falls into place with his passing game.

Agreed.  I get the impression that Olson plans on chipping away the yardage with big guys pushing the way for tons of rushing yards and short passes to TEs and Slot WR/Half-backs.

That's why we drafted yeldon for that role though, he hasn't got breakaway speed to consistently get the 20+ runs how he's a strong workhorse who can consistently get you 4/5 yards pc.


How quickly he can change direction will get him a few long runs but generally wouldn't expect to many from him.

If the Jaguars keep four RBs, I think that Grants hits the practice squad and Storm is sent packing. If they keep five, my guess is that Grant makes it and Storm hits the PS. Pierce is something of a true backup for Gerhart, and I think that gets him on the team if he performs decently well in the preseason.

I'm with ya, the rook has to win the job. I think he will. It's not like an MJD/Fred situation where MJD had to sit due to the quality ahead of him. Gerhart, power (and offseason quips of marked improvement). DROB, speed/space/still transitioning. Pierce, unknown. Yeldon, a combination of all, plus it appears he can withstand the beating, and don't forget, 'king of elusiveness', class of '15. An interesting battle indeed.

I don't think it's that much of an uphill battle. Regardless of how often it doesn't work out, teams are very reluctant to let S-tier speed off the roster.

He'll get an opportunity and we have all of training camp to see how it pans out. I'm not impressed so far. So far he seems like a one trick pony and that won't get him far unless he starts standing out above the others. He stands out, but it's for lack of ball skills at the moment.

It won't but he's not competing for a starting or even 2nd string role, he's the 4th RB and adds ST value, which would be the main reason to keep him.
