Why TJ Yeldon is Undervalued
|
Hi fellow Jaguars fans, I wrote a piece on why I think our rookie TJ Yeldon is undervalued and should prove to be a breakout player this season. Please take a look and would love your feedback.

2015 NFL Draft - Analyzing Targets www.jungle.jaguars.com/index.php?/topic/7892-2015-nfl-draft-analyzing-targets/

Personally I don't think he's undervalued, I think he still has a lot to prove. He's been a fumbler, and unless that gets solved by this coaching staff then it doesn't matter how well he runs when he's not getting hit, he'll find his way to the bench coughing the ball up.
How much did Yeldon fumble compared to
Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon? Curious.

Looks like he had 7 fumbles through three college seasons sharing snaps. That's not good, and while some people are thinking he'll be a steal my guess is he'll be considered one of Caldwell's worst need reaches if the coaching staff can't get him to squeeze the ball. Don't get to down on his fumbles. He had 10 in 3 years. He was the feature back for the tide and is Bamas 4th all time rusher

I think you may be exaggerating a bit. Every back splits carries it just happens to be Bama who have NFL caliber backs so people remember that more. 7 fumbles in 3 years is not the worst, honestly. DEFINITELY needs to be fixed, but I'm sure the coaches are working on that.

I was confused about your use of the term "undervalued" since he seems to be quite valued by the Jags staff and fan-base. Though he's proven nothing beyond his draft status yet, most everyone believes he'll be an upgrade to the team at RB and should be complimented/spelled effectively by Robinson/Gerhart. Then I realized your article is primarily about fantasy football. The forum for that is here: http://jungle.jaguars.com/index.php?/forum/34-fantasy/
Demarco Murray had 5 last season alone. Granted a high workload but still. A couple per year average is not bust status.
BJGE never fumbled, and he only broke 1k yards once. Jamaal Charles has had 4 the past 2 seasons each and 5 the season before that. 10 in 3 years is about 3.3 a year. That's not bad at all.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

I hope they'll find a way to help him that Nick Saban apparently couldn't. If he keeps fumbling he'll eventually be benched regardless of how good the rest of his game is, because nothing kills an inexperienced team's chances at winning like turnovers.

That was 10 in about 550 carries, in the NFL a full workload kind of season is around 300 carries. If you think him fumbling 5 or 6 times in a season is acceptable then I think you'll find not many coaches will agree.

Everybody has a lot to prove. We'll see. I just don't think it's that fair to point out a fumble in practice. I read that the play was pretty much over and someone swiped at it. Forgot where I saw that, but I saw the video also. Only time will tell!

Adrian Peterson fumbled 9 times in his second season and 7 in his third. One every 42 carries. Tiki Barber fumbled 24 times over a 5 year span in just under 1300 carries for an average of 1 per 53 carries. If Yeldon had 10 in 3 years with 576 carries, it averages 1 per 58 carries. I think he will he okay.

Forgot where I saw that, but I saw the video also. Only time will tell! This is correct, play was more or less over and Gratz just swiped at it. I dont think he has much of a fumbling problem tbh. Gurley - 510 attempts - 3 fumbles - 170 attempts per fumbles Yeldon - 576 attempts - 10 fumbles - 57.6 attempts per fumble Gordon - 631 attempts - 12 fumbles - 52.6 attempts per fumble as you can see a better attempt per fumble ration than the consensus number 2 eligible back, this is also whilst playing against better competition. If you think him fumbling 5 or 6 times in a season is acceptable then I think you'll find not many coaches will agree.I dunno. I know coaches don't necessarily clamor for RBs with fumbleitis. But I think it is a cost-benefit analysis. Consider Hall of Fame RB Tony Dorsett, who played most of his career under Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry. He had three (3) seasons of double digit fumbles-1978, 1981, and 1984. He had two other seasons of eight (8) or more fumbles. He never had more than 374 touches (rushes and receptions) in a year. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/pl...rsTo00.htm I think if you are an otherwise great RB, coaches will live with some fumbles (albeit through clenched teeth, I'm sure). The trick for Yeldon is to keep fumbling to a minimum and otherwise prove he is a great RB. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Alabama used a two back system since he was there. In the easy games he did not play much. The rest were against SEC West competition.
VERY IMPRESSIVE! He changed his commitment to Auburn 1 hour before signing time. I have hated him for 3 years and wanted him to fail.It never happened. Of course now he is my man

You can teach certain things to players coming out of college. If they worked with Denard to cut down on the fumbles, then Yeldon should vastly improve there too.
That being said, if Yeldon loses the rock a couple times early in the season, I see him coming off the field in favor of Denard or Toby. Coaches traditionally don't trust rookies who lose the ball and defenders can smell it like a shark can smell blood in the water. Quote:Alabama used a two back system since he was there. In the easy games he did not play much. The rest were against SEC West competition. As a LSU fan Yeldon has broken my heart several times. I feel your pain. As a Jag, I must root for him. Hopefully he'll make it easy and be a contributor to our club.
