Dave Caldwell/2014 draft

#1

So, I was just looking at all of our drafts and wow, the 14 draft COULD end up being something really special.

2014 Draft

1. Blake Bortles

2. Marqise Lee

2. Allen Robinson

3. Brandon Linder

4. Aaron Colvin

5. Telvin Smith

5. Chris Smith

6. Luke Bowanko

7. Storm Johnson

No GM hits on 100% of their picks, but this line up has the ability, and so far has shown signs, it could be something really good in a year or two. Storm will likely not make the cut, but other than that there's some tremendous potential here.

Conversely and not to bring up old regimes, but I am, wow the differences in drafting from Gene to Dave is amazing.

2012 Draft

1. Justin Blackmon

2. Andre Branch

3. Bryan Anger

5. Brandon Marshall

6. Mike Harris

7. Jeris Pendleton

It's hard to imagine that the 2014 draft won't end up the best in franchise history.

Dave pretty much had to hit on about 80% of his draft picks if he was going to get this team competitive in his 3 year plan. He's done a great job.

I was going to list out all of his drafts and say that 2013 in comparison to 2014 wasn't nearly as successful, but I was trying to make a point on just how good of a draft 2014 was. Hence the name of the thread as "Dave Caldwell/2014 draft", instead of just "Dave Caldwell"

Sure enough though, 2013 isn't anywhere close to the 14 draft, but as stated no GM is 100%. He's really good though, in my opinion. He's got his misses for sure.

You skipped

Denard Robinson

Storm Johnson is the only one I dont think will be here much longer, but that's typical for 7th rounders.

Yeah '14 draft looks pretty amazing.  To get that many key players in one draft is unheard of.

The 2014 draft is what changed the course of the Jacsonville Jaguars. Finally we have real players on this team.

The 2013 draft, from top to bottom, wasn't very good. I don't think a single team came out of that draft significantly better. Dave did the best he could with what he had to work with.

The 2014 draft, on the other hand, has a chance to go down in history. Talent everywhere, and Dave took full advantage. It's still early, but it looks as if eight of the nine picks could be a star, solid, or at least a serviceable backup. That's unheard of.

It could be argued though, that some on that list are pretty much un-proven, starting with Marqise Lee.  Don't get me wrong, I really like this guy, but he hasn't really proven much.  The same could be said regarding Aaron Colvin (he looks promising).  Chris Smith needs to show something.

Time will tell, but I think the biggest star for the Jaguars' 2014 draft class (aside from Blake Bortles) is going to be un-drafted rookie Allen Hurns.

With the 7th round pick, it was worth a shot.  The highest person on the draft board at that time was Michael Sam.

I liked the pick at the time, and thought it'd ease Bortles' comfort level with a fellow UCF player, but I'm not sure he'll make the 4th spot on the depth chart

If Caldwell is so smart then why would he trade a QB that subsequently had a 100.0 passer rating upon his departure from the Jags?

Looking at the depth chart as posted right now, my guess is that he probably won't get the 4th spot simply because he is not listed under special teams.

I tend to think that 2014 draft class will be equivalent to the 2011 bengals draft. Obviously ours didn't have the immediate impact as theirs but nonetheless it will have produced the main quality starters that will have this team competing for years to come. This was one of the better draft classes in recent memory.

The 2014 class was amazing. It wouldn't shock me if 3 or 4 guys from this group go to more than 1 pro bowl. Although it's way too early to tell, the 2015 class may be almost as special. Fowler, Yeldon and Cann were great picks and Bennett could be the steal of the entire draft. Not quite as sure about Sample and Greene, but it they develop into starters Caldwell will have had two A+ drafts in 3 years. Unfortunately 2013 looks like about a C- grade, but at least he's rebounded the last 2 years.

We haven't had a probowler since mjd. Let's wait to crown 3 or 4 guys as probowlers a year in...
