Quote:It could be argued though, that some on that list are pretty much un-proven, starting with Marqise Lee.  Don't get me wrong, I really like this guy, but he hasn't really proven much.  The same could be said regarding Aaron Colvin (he looks promising).  Chris Smith needs to show something.

Time will tell, but I think the biggest star for the Jaguars' 2014 draft class (aside from Blake Bortles) is going to be un-drafted rookie Allen Hurns.

If Lee never plays again, we have a find in Hurns like you said and also Robinson. But what makes this draft so impressive is the early buzz surrounding Linder, Colvin and Telvin. That's finding some studs late. Not including all he really needed to do was find a quality QB to say it was a success. That's all we ever said! Find the QB. But he may have found so much more. The books definitely not written, but you can see they're good players. This team has lacked "good" players for so long!

If blake wins this city a super bowl, hands down best ever. If he gets us to the AFC Championship, and loses...same story.

I have hope for Bortles though. He is what we thought he would be after a year of experience.

Blaine has always had the physical attributes to be a decent QB, but this franchise was in dire need of a change, as was he.

Promising Players Draft/UDFA:

1. Blake Bortles

2. Allen Robinson

3. Marqise Lee

4. Allen Hurns

5. Brandon Linder

6. Aaron Colvin

7. Demetrius McCray

8. Telvin Smith

9. Denard Robinson

10. Chris Smith

11. Luke Bowanko

12. Jonathan Cyprien

13. Rashad Greene

14. Michael Bennett

15. AJ Cann

16. Dante Fowler

17. TJ Yeldon

18. Abry Jones

19. James Sample

20. Corey Grant

21. Cap Capi??? Maybe?

Not Promising Draft/UDFA:

1. Luke Joeckel

2. Dwayne Gratz

3. Josh Evans

4. Jeremy Harris

5. Storm Johnson

6. A bunch of below average UDFA's that I don't want to type

That looks like a very, very, very promising group of players and that's not to mention our other vets and FA's we have to pair with them. The ones that are struggling could still bounce back though, because they've had some flashes of good play in the past. I'd say Caldwell is doing an excellent job so far if these players end up playing how we think they will. Unlike the players Gene Smith use to get for us.... Everyone was trash and we knew they were trash day 1.

2014 Draft looks good, 2014 FA's looking like mostley misses.

You hit and you miss, but as long as you give your team the best chance to win & to hire quality character players what more as a fan can you really ask for?

Clemons, Gerhart, Beadles, Red Bryant(when he was here) and Ziggy give good depth. Clemons has been a nice starter and has surprisingly played well for his age, plus coming off of that super-bowl win. I think Toby will be better this season since he won't have that lingering injury that stuck with him throughout last season. Beadles is looking better, but he was caught holding a little too much against the Steelers. Not much to say about Ziggy, I don't think he'll be here for much longer when Sen'Derrick is back to form. You also have to remember we're the Jags, and not many FA's wanted to come here before and definitely not after that 2013 season. I also remember hearing about Caldwell not wanting to spend big money on FA's until we built some core pieces on the team from the draft.

Josh Evans may not be starter material but the guy can tackle

To find a solid back up ss with a 6th rounder is a solid hit in my view

I do however think cyp has to go below joeckel on that list

Guy has not shown enough

2013 draft is looking pretty bad. I might not blame Caldwell on that. It just looks like that draft class sucks.

Usually when you hold the 2nd overall pick you get the best guy in the draft...

Yeah 2013 was an awful draft and even worse if you picked in the top 5.

Birth of the Franchise - November 30, 1993
Death of the Franchise - November 29, 2011

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

Quote:I was going to list out all of his drafts and say that 2013 in comparison to 2014 wasn't nearly as successful, but I was trying to make a point on just how good of a draft 2014 was. Hence the name of the thread as "Dave Caldwell/2014 draft", instead of just "Dave Caldwell"

Sure enough though, 2013 isn't anywhere close to the 14 draft, but as stated no GM is 100%. He's really good though, in my opinion. He's got his misses for sure.

You skipped

Denard Robinson

Demetrius McCray
Based on the overall talent pool of 2013 I'd say Dave did alright in his first ever draft.

He got Drob and Mccray late, and while LJ and Cyp haven't been all-stars, we could do worse at those positions, and they aren't hurting us so much that he can't fix it if they don't elevate.

Also, anything that is a "miss" or didn't work out after round 3 is OK with me.

Ace Sanders, didn't work out, oh well. Late round pick.

Evans was a late rounder.

Gratz was a 3rd, so you'd like to see him stick around, but as solid DB depth, 3rd round ain't bad, when a good starter came out of the 7th.

Shows you how bad it was for the Chiefs, when the second pick was a whole lot better than the first.  If the second was seen as a disappointment, how do you think they feel?

Sosa -- you definitely have Teal colored glasses on.

How can you list the following under Promising:

Fowler --- 3rd pick in the draft -- OUT FOR YEAR

TJ Yeldin - 36th pick in the draft - DID NOT PLAY IN PRESEASON GAME 1 (nagging injuries in college)

Marqise Lee - 39th pick in the draft - NAGGING INJURIES

I think you need a new category entitled Potential Concerns ....

Fowler didn't die. He's coming back.

Yeldin, too, is still alive and well. He'll be ready by week one.

Lee is the most gifted athlete on the roster. That, in itself, is promising.
