Tape Tuesday

#1

Logs is on 1010xl now taking calls after breaking down tape.

Linder the last subject.  Says he's the best Caldwell pick to date.  Really talking up his hands.

Said Shatley is the strongest by far of all the centers, and he'll cost someone a job.

Could be the C or G of the future.

Says the only thing he's missing is experience vs. his competition.

Said Joeckel wasn't tested much in Pittsburgh game.

Steelers were almost exclusively rushing Dupree, meaning Parnell got the toughest workout.

(That would explain Parnell not grading as high as Joeckel.)

Noted Joeckel was set too flat on Harrison's sack.

Says Jockel is a better run blocker than Joe Thomas.

Also says he has better feet.

The problem area he says he needs to work on is keeping his head up, gaining confidence.

That's quite the compliment. I still think LJs problems are mental. He clearly has the ability to make the blocks and play the position, he just looses focus, and I think some confidence would help a ton.

I think we'll be forced to keep Shatley as an extra man on the line. If they let Beatles or Wiz walk next year he could compete for a starting position.

Edit - I misspoke about the "better feet" (typing faster than I'm processing.)

He said he's got similar traits with his feet.  Meaning, his feet are about as good but he doesn't have the power of Thomas.  Not sure he will.

That's not a knock, just that if Joeckel puts it together he can still be a fine LT even if he doesn't have the power of a guy like Thomas.

That's exactly what he was suggesting.  You just said it better than I did.

Like a team learning to win by stringing together a few wins in bunches, he needs some personal wins put together to gain confidence.

For a third pick of the draft, third year player, shouldn't we expect more from him at this point? Still expecting him to gain confidence at this point of his career seems kind of silly. If he doesn't turn his game around this year, he needs to go. We don't need another Alualu sitting on the roster.

remember, he lost a year due to injury.  in essence from a strength & technique perspective, i still see him as a year 2 player.

I could believe the strength and conditioning thing, maybe. But this guy was a destroyer in college, that is why he was picked #3. His confidence should not be something we are worrying about.

That's a big big problem though. You look at Blake, who had tons of mechanical issues last season, yet at the end of the day you get a feeling he'll bounce back because you never get the sense he will lose confidence regardless of what happened. Look at Luke's reaction after getting beat by Harrison. The best players, the confident ones, make mistakes (everyone does) but it doesn't faze them or even frustrate them.

Luke's reaction was that of complete frustration. As the LT, you'll get beat. If he's already getting frustrated like this in the 1st game of preseason? Imagine how he'll be mid-season.

I just googled "Tyler Shatley Scouting Report", he benched 225 40 TIMES at Clemson's proday last year, that is indeed some freaky strength. Check out the link http://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sp...y/6152309/

He was picked at #2.

So far he's been #2.

Shatley also has a 30.5 inch Vert leap, that guy is an impressive athlete with unbelievable upside.

Thank you for the correction.

Do you mean he has been playing like the #2 pick or he is playing like a #2 LT.

Or he's playing like he needs to take a #2, or he's the #2 himself

The Shatley love seems real. I wonder how many Olineman they plan to keep? If it is only 9 then Pasztor or Wells is gone.

Joeckel, Beadles, Bowanko, Linder, Parnell, Cann, and Wiz all seem to be locks. That leaves Shatley, Wells, Pasztor, and Young fighting for 1-2 positions.
