Dave Caldwell/2014 draft

Quote:Sosa -- you definitely have Teal colored glasses on.

How can you list the following under Promising:

Fowler --- 3rd pick in the draft -- OUT FOR YEAR

TJ Yeldin - 36th pick in the draft - DID NOT PLAY IN PRESEASON GAME 1 (nagging injuries in college)

Marqise Lee - 39th pick in the draft - NAGGING INJURIES

I think you need a new category entitled Potential Concerns ....
Are they not promising young players coming out of college? Yeldon was 4th all-time rusher in Alabama with "nagging injuries" and has looked great when we've seen him in training camp/scrimmage. Fowler will be back, his career isn't over... And Lee would be a beast if he could stay healthy. If they aren't promising, what are they? Duds? Baddies? Busts? In my opinion, yes, they are promising players.

Feel free to start a thread about the 2013 draft and how crappy it was. This one is about the really good one that, followed, 2014.

Don't panic, I'm sure not ALL of the 14 draft picks will be superstars so you can have that peace of mind and not let yourself get too high.

Yes, but you could essentially list every single player that was drafted -- so every GM is a genius right now.

Living in Real Time (aka Aug 18, 2015) -- that Fowler pick shouldn't be classified as Promising.

I just want to know which team, head and shoulders, had a better draft in 2013?

The talent pool just wasn't there. Much of it was a crap shoot.

There were 8 probowlers from that draft.

I don't think we clearly missed on anything, considering the holes we were staring at.

Joker is still better than most of the choices we had at the top of the draft.

Hindsight 20/20.

yadda yadda.

As per the 2014 draft.

Well... it might end up being pretty darn good.

And 2015 (albeit very very early) could be the icing on the cake.

If Caldwell's first draft ever as GM nets us 2 starters in Cyp and McCray (even if they aren't superstars) and 2 key role players Drob and Evans

and his second gets us a franchise QB, and studs in Colvin and T. Smith and Linder. (Not to mention weapons, actual weapons at WR)

And his 3rd likely lands us our franchise RB and pass rushers Bennett and Fowler, along with players that at worst will be depth like Cann and Greene

We can let him slide on the Joker selection. Even though he had nothing better to choose from.

There's no point to talk about this if you're going to act like a Debby Downer and label top draft picks "busts" because they got injured. How can you sit here and tell me Dante Fowler, the #3 overall pick isn't a promising pick? And same for Yeldon. Have you not seen the kid run in training camp or the scrimmage? It's not an actual game, but he looks really good. With your logic, he has a hurt finger, so that means the pick is bad and he'll end up as a bust.

That draft class had barely any talent to begin with, especially if you were picking in the top 10. I feel like we were lucky to get D-Rob and McCray and them turn out to be good players, so it wasn't THAT bad. Who knows, maybe Joeckel can turn things around and that'll be three good picks from the 2013 draft.

This is close to the truth but have you looked at the entire 2013 draft. The entire draft was bad. Like only a few teams walked away with 1 starter. The Brennan who is possibly gonna get cut from our oline roster was a third rounder that year by the tinhorns. That draft was horribad lol.

And this thread is about the 2014 draft. I know it's hard for some of you to keep up.

Actually, the OP brought up the 2012 draft in an attempt to take a shot at the old regimine when in fact the new regimine was just as guilty with their terrible 2013 draft, so did I lose the point of the OP? I don't think so.

Ok so talk about it. Yes, it was bad and not as good as the following two. There. How does it take always what appears to be great the following year and potentially this year?

Yes, that's exactly what you say. If you're not being a pessimist, you're getting your hopes up for failure in the end. There is no way to be positive after seeing a full decade of losses. We Jaguar fans have to stick together and be Debbie Downers. If not, the losses will hurt more and we'll be climbing the Modis building by October.

A finger injury causing him to miss the first preseason game is hardly enough to remove Yeldon from the promising category. He may still end up as the best player from this draft beating out Colvin, Telvin, Bortles, Linder and ARob.

It's sad that Fowler was gone for the year so quickly, but deep down I wonder if he'll be better for it having the chance to really learn and build as a rookie.

If there's one player where you wonder if the team could have made a better pick (aside from Storm who I doubt makes this year's roster), it's Marquis Lee. In retrospect, Jordan Matthews was playing lights out for the Eagles as a rookie WR with much better stats than ARob. Come to think of it, he'd be a great fantasy pick-up after the first couple rounds.

To early for me to be excited about the 2014 draft. In 2010 most thought the 2009 draft was going to set the table for a jags run. In 2014 most thought 2013 was setting the table for a new era in jags football. I'm hopefull this class doesn't take a sophomore slump like others have but I've learned we don't really know what we have until we're at least 3 seasons in.

Why does people on here want to bring up negative picks in other years when this OP was about 2014. The draft looks really good in 2014.I started noticing this about mid year.

Its like any team. You hit sometimes and then you dont.

It's strange. I mean if only Bortles were to pan out, the draft is a hit. But to have long term starters at receiver, guard, cornerback and linebacker. Not the mention potential starter at center. It looks great right now.

It is reminiscent of the draft classes that made the 49ers, and more recently the Steelers, so great.
