Possibly. But the contract is structured so there is zero dead money after this season. So I doubt the team is looking at him as a long term solution.

And IIRC he only played when the real starters were unable to play. Granted, Aldon Smith is pretty good.

Justin Forsett - ok


Jordy Nelson - 2nd rd pick. Started producing in 3rd year. Typical of most receivers


Martellus Bennett - 2nd round pick. Has played decent for every team he played for especially as a run blocker.


Evan Mathis - ok, but 3rd rd pick


Tony Romo - started playing well for cowboys in his third year


Emmanuel Sanders - 3rd rd pick started producing in 3rd year. Typical WR progression.


Randall Cobb - highly touted prospect out of KY, 2nd rd pick. Produced in just his second year. Yup, just like Skuta.


Cameron Wake - never been unproductive in any season in the NFL, CFL, or college.


Mike Adams - you think he is that good?

Jordy Nelson didn't even break 600 yrds receiving in a season until his 4th year. Emmanuel Sanders didn't break 1000yrds until his 5th season.  Martellus Bennett was a situational guy who wasn't a full time starter until his 5th season. Romo didn't even take a snap in his third season.

 

I never said anything about Mike Adams except he went to the pro bowl. So someone obviously thinks he is opretty good.

Emmanuel Sanders had 44 catches in 3rd year. Pretty good for a young guy and he looked good while doing it.


Nelson 45 catches in 3rd year. Again, pretty good. Also a 2nd round pick and probably starts on one team for duration of career. Not similar to Skuta at all. Not a story about a guy who "came on late" like you are trying to say.


That is typical progression for most receivers. Nothing un-ordinary about it.


Sorry Romo became a star for Dallas in his 4th season. My point still stands. Year 3 vs year 4 is not a huge difference.


As for Bennett.. Ya I stand by what I already said; he has been contributing for every team he played for. He was a highly regarded talent in the draft, a physically gifted freak. Adequate production early for a TE2 and started many games in first 4 years at DAL, Productive full time starter for NYG in 5th, best years in CHI.

Average player with an above average salary for a position of need in our defense.  If he fits then he'll have above average production.  I'll definitely take it.

 

The OTTO position is so unknown to me since it hasn't worked and we've altered the scheme in the last few years to work around the lack of talent.

It is also about the perspective.  From mine, I say average in the NFL is a positive quality.  Average athletes that can play in the NFL for a long time don't grow on trees.  

 

Just because a guy doesn't rack up eye popping stats or makes flashy plays, doesn't mean fans should rail on the guy.
