Phil Taylor

#1

Cleveland released former 2011 first round draft choice Phil Taylor today.

There are rumors that he asked for his release.

Given that Marks will not be ready for the opener, I think the team should sign him to a short term deal.

He would be immediately better than Alualu and Hood and provide quality insurance at DT.

Phil Taylor is not a 3-tech player. He's a straight-up nose tackle.

That said, he may well be a better nose tackle than Roy Miller.

We should get him. I like people with two first names.

The problem is he can't stay healthy

TJ Bender...you are right and in my analysis, I completely forgot Miller.

I also agree that Taylor would upgrade him, too.

Don't we have enough of these problems already?

Not nearly as much as many other teams right now. In fact, I'd say we're looking a lot better than most teams in the injury department. It sucked losing Fowler, but he may have been a complete non factor this season anyways.

I wouldn't mind bringing in the extra depth because we need it. Hopefully if we do take a looksey he's on the healthy track.

What's interesting is that the Browns picked up his 5th year option then decided to cut him. He'll make a fully guaranteed 5 mil this season regardless if he plays another down.

You don't just cut someone like that unless there is a serious problem. They are basically saying he isn't even worthy of being a depth player.

I'm guessing he is damaged goods. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole

Well like the OP stated it sounds like he asked for his release. Maybe they were just being nice by granting his request? It is the Browns front office we're talking about after all.

Apparently Cleveland reached an injury settlement with him, so he shouldn't be getting the full $5 million.

You have a link on that? I've looked but haven't seen anything showing they reached an injury settlement.

According to a Cleveland.Com article,  the Browns will be paying Phil Taylor $ 5.477 million NOT to play for them this season.

Either the Browns have great DT/ NT depth,  Phil Taylor is damaged goods,  and/ or the Browns Organization is incompetent.

What would Phil Taylor's incentive be to accept an injury settlement when he's guaranteed $ 5.477 million if he doesn't accept an injury settlement?

Unless the injury settlement is for at least $ 4 million,  it just doesn't add up.

I'm sure the fact he's in a contract year and he'd be riding the pine in Cleveland has something to do with it. He could take the $5.5 million to stay in Cleveland while wasting away on the bench because Shelton is their new starting NT and likely end up with a cheap prove-it deal from some other team next season. Or he could take something like $3-4 million and go somewhere else where he can start and ideally play himself into a new contract right away. Also he'd get some additional money from whatever team signs him.

The question now becomes,  what kind of contract offers and playing opportunities will Phil Taylor get this season?    And in addition,  is he healthy enough to get a good long term contract?

I have no idea what the answers are to these questions.   But if Taylor is damaged goods,  he probably will end up regretting taking the injury settlement.

It's not that he wasn't good enough to make the team. He was going to be a Brown this year, but he asked for his release because he wasn't going to be starting, and for whatever reason, the Browns cut him loose without demanding that he return part of his signing bonus or forfeit his guarantees.

There's also that.

It really depends on what the settlement was. If he gave up a million or so, he should be able to make that back this season plus he can pick a team where he'll get playing time. If he really bet on himself and took only a million or so to get out of Cleveland, then it could turn out quite bad if he's not healthy.

I'm assuming there must not have been a trade market whatsoever for him though.
