Kentucky Clerk Is Jailed For Refusal to Issue Marriage Licenses As A Result Of Her Religious Beliefs

Quote:   The validity of the ' law'  is definitely an issue on this end.

As long as Kim Davis remains in her position,  I definitely believe she shouldn't issue the licenses that she has refused to and no one working under her should issue the licenses.

I usually agree with you regarding most things, especially politics, but I disagree with you here.  I think that she should either resign from her position, or face the consequences of refusing to obey the law.

I think the end result will likely be one of the two things you suggested.   With resignation the most likely eventually outcome.

jagibelieve,  one other thought.   While we agree on the vast majority of political and related discussions,  this is an illustration that no one agrees with another person 100 % of the time.   Even though we disagree occasionally,    I certainly appreciate your input,  information,  and the way you respond to others.

What I can't understand is why can't people worry about themselves instead of what others are doing? Why do they have to interfere in other people's personal lives? Really, who gives a damn? Personally, I think that woman is a full blown idiot and deserves to be fired for insubordination. Some people just aren't happy unless they're throwing their religion in other people's faces against their own will..

Thank you for those kind words, and the same goes for me.  I do respect your opinions and appreciate your posts both here in the political forum as well as the other forums here.

Bingo. Government is agnostic (can I use that word?). The US government does not care what you think or believe, it only cares about due process under the law. If someone's personal, religious beliefs interfere with their ability to perform their lawful duties as prescribed by an agnostic government, then they should either resign or be prepared to spend time in jail waiting for a visit from Mike Huckaclown.

What I still don't get is how someone who's been married four times has any standing to condemn the first marriage of other people on religious grounds.

Reported for making me laugh too hard. At the very least, you owe me some screen cleaner and a microfiber cloth to replace the one that's now forever stained in some weird sparkling fruit-flavored water stuff that's actually surprisingly good. Worst case, you owe me a monitor.

Its really simple....

Why should YOUR religion have any bearing on MY life? Why should a belief that YOU chose affect what I do at all?

Its interesting the only time you hear Americans argue "religious freedom" is when they want to control or discriminate other people's lives, with zero consideration for those person's freedoms.

Its a bad look.

How is it "free will" if she is forcing her staff to comply with her belief? Free will is what you have for yourself...not what you force upon someone else.

Not really true all the time, though in this thread it is.  Consider this argument to remove a veteran memorial because it "offended" someone's "religious freedom".

Technically, the lady is exercising her "free will".  Is she right under the law?  No.  She's not forcing her belief on her staff, she is using her belief to make policy decisions.  Her staff are simply doing their jobs by obeying her instructions as their supervisor.

I'm not saying that she is right, but she is not "forcing" anyone to comply with her belief... technically.

She can fire her staff, can she not?

We're opening up a hypothetical here assuming that her staff fails to follow her instructions.  Again, she is not "forcing her belief" directly to any of her staff, she is making policy decisions and issuing instructions based on her belief.  Her staff are simply following her instructions, even if it's against their own belief.

Her free will was possessed by demons?

That explains a lot.
