Personally, and I have changed on this subject over the years, I am ok with it. He hasn't been found guilty of anything. When and if that time comes, then suspend him. But I am ok right now with him playing.

One of the few things that I have taken from Vic Ketchman is his stance on things like this. If the law says it's okay, then who am I to differ? The League -- despite some of their recent actions -- is not a morality policing organization; they are an employer like any other. Why should they act any different?

I think it just happens as you age. I've become a lot more sympathetic and less harsh -- if that makes any sense -- as I've aged. Hard to believe, but I've actually mellowed out!

What bothers me as a Broncos fan is I have to worry about Kansas City's best wide receiver when most likely Champ Bailey will not be on the field. Before handing the reins over to JDR, John Fox said he wants to make sure Bailey is completely healthy before he plays again.

 

Does starting a player who was recently arrested bother me? I think it depends on what he was arrested for. If it was a simple speeding ticket or driving with an expired liscense, that would be OK. But I would not start a player with a DUI arrest.

I understand where you're coming from - but he will be held accountable, after he's convicted of something. Prior to that he gets the benefit of the doubt, even though practically everyone thinks he's guilty.

 

DUIs are a real quandary. Good to see they are being taken much more seriously than previously. But we still run in to that innocent until proven guilty thing.

I was pointing out that I do not believe that the League has to act like a morality police; they are simply an employer. This is not a recreational sport that these men play, it's how they make their living. My job would not punish me for having a run-in with the law, at least not before a trial was held, so why should any other employer?

Which I can only assume meant that since you have served in the armed forces -- pretty sure this is it due to your screen name and all -- that you would not allow Bowe to play and that this restriction of his income is done in light of "holding people accountable."

My employer fired me a long time ago when I got arrested. All charges were dropped. Good news for me except I didn't have a job. Employers don't want people working for them that gives the company a bad name or image. The NFL is different of course. But hopefully that starts to answer why an employer might do something regardless of what the law says.
