I like Kasich a lot, actually. I don't think he stands a chance, and I don't know that he brings much to the table as a running mate, but I do hope he finds his way into a new administration somehow.

VP - Jeb Bush - I say this because they are close friends and allies, and Jeb would bring the funding in.  He also has the qualifications for the position.

 

Should he win, I think the following positions should be filled as follows.

 

Secretary of State - Carly Fiorina - She probably has more experience with foreign governments than anyone else on the stage.

Attorney General - Ted Cruz - Probably the best lawyer on the stage.

Do you really think Jeb would have any interest in being VP, though? I'd have a hard time seeing him accept that role.

 

I don't think Fiorina or Cruz will have any roles in a new Republican administration. I wouldn't be shocked to see Paul, Christie, Walker or Rubio (assuming he's not the nominee) take on cabinet positions, and Dr. Carson would be a natural fit and outstanding choice for Surgeon General regardless of who wins the Presidency, Democrat or Republican. I can't think of any others off the top of my head who would want and/or be offered cabinet appointments, and I do think it's important to remember that the cabinet positions, quite possibly even the VP slot, will be filled by people not on the debate stage.

  The reason why I don't think Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush will be on the same ticket is they both are from Florida.   As important as winning Florida is for the Republicans chances in the 2016 Presidential Election,    having more regional variety on the ticket probably is the more likely outcome.    I'm not a fan of John Kasich but if he can win Ohio as the VP Nominee for a good candidate at the top of the ticket,   that option has to seriously be considered.

It can be both.   So much depends on who the candidate is.  

 

I'm looking at it from my perspective,  which I consider a Conservative perspective.    There are some Conservative ( for the most part ) candidates that probably won't appeal to enough voter segments.   Rick Santorum comes to mind.   But I truly believe that Ted Cruz ranks at or near the top of the most electable Republicans in the 2016 Presidential Race.

  After seeing Ronald Reagan select George H. Bush as his running mate,  I believe that John Kasich would at least be seriously considered by some of the Conservative candidates as the VP selection.   Including Ted Cruz and some other Conservative Senators.  Kasich is both a Governor and in a critical swing state.  

 

 Though I have some major disagreements with Kasich and wouldn't be enthusiastic with him at the top of the ticket  ( unless he chooses a great running mate from my perspective ),  he could be the difference in Ted Cruz being elected President if Cruz wins the nomination.   Though I would prefer Marco Rubio as Cruz's running mate from a more purest standpoint,  I have major concerns about 2 Senators being on the ticket.   If Mike Huckabee beats the odds and is the nominee for President,  Rubio would be my choice as the VP selection.

 But like I have expressed in some other threads since the Political selection was added to the forum,   John McCain never should have selected Sarah Palin because he didn't let her play to her strengths.   Palin was willing to speak about Obama's numerous associations and baggage but with the exception of Bill Ayers,  McCain and his campaign silenced Palin.    The way McCain ran his campaign,  he would have lost the election regardless of who he selected.  

 

 Mitt Romney also ran a very politically correct campaign.   The aggressiveness he displayed in the Republican primary process disappeared in the general election campaign.   That was predictable.   The prevent Defense strategy  ( that's probably even giving him too much credit ) Romney used in the final debate was a major factor in the outcome of the election.

McCain was my choice, hands-down, even after Palin came on board. When she started letting her crazy side out to play, I became disinterested in McCain. My logic was that if McCain had to resign or passed away based upon his health (melanoma), Palin would be left in charge of this country's nuclear arsenal. I was not willing to see this happen. I can't remember anymore if I voted for Obama, voted for whoever the Libertarian Party ran, or just wrote in William Shatner's name, but McCain fell off my ballot entirely. I recall lots of moderates being turned off by Palin. Obama probably would still have won because he, unlike Gore or Kerry, was able to bring out the youth and minority votes that Democrats count on for victories. Still, though, I think McCain had a good chance up until Palin turned his candidacy from a viable campaign into a sideshow.

 

My impression has always been that Romney was never expected to win the general election. Obama was a juggernaut at that point, and the Republicans knew it. He was thrown out there essentially because the Republicans didn't want to risk damaging the political fortunes of their rising stars (like Bobby Jindal...that didn't work out well) by having them steamrolled by Obama. I can clearly recall how hard the Fox News, CNN, MSNBC and three-letter networks were trying to make it seem like there was actually a race on election night, even though it was clear within the first 90 minutes that Obama was going to destroy Romney. If the sort of pounding that Romney took had happened to Cruz, Rubio, Bush or Rand Paul (not that any of them, aside from maybe Bush, were ready to run in 2012), the nation would have had a hard time taking them seriously in this campaign. Hence, you throw out a guy in his 70's who has no political future to ruin and shield the Bobby Jindals and Jeb Bushes of the world from that butt-kicking.
