Defense may be improving but the offense refuses to

The offense has improved over last year despite the 2nd half woes.  To claim otherwise is disingenuous. Right now, Bortles is on pace to have one of the better years for a QB for this franchise, and the sack numbers are dramatically down from last season.  Those are just two areas of improvement without putting any real thought into it.

This team lacks chemistry on offense, whether or not that develops remains to be seen.

How does a team build chemistry? Continuity. Time. Coaching.

Many of these players have 16 games together.... some a season or so more...

Less and less roster turnover after each offseason...

 

It is on the coaching staff to get the most out of what is currently the team. Caldwell has put together pieces in such a way we should be winning games we "should" be winning by now.

I don't know if changing coaches will fix our issues but I do know that at the surface; Bortles is good enough, for now, Arob, Colvin, Smith, all very capable players. Yeldon looks the part. Linder, Parnell, Wiz, very good pieces to an offensive line.

 

IMO...Tampa Bay is now a must win. 

If we get caught shooting ourselves in the foot again... there is only one place to blame

We're 31st in the league in points scored.  In 2013 and 2014 we were 32nd.  So if we want to sit around talking about our improvement, sure, it's there for you.

 

Of course, we were 30th with Mularkey, Henne and Gabbert in 2012 using the universally agreed "terrible talentless Gene Smith" roster, so there's that...

How about not being able to compile a decent secondary, even though we've drafted what 6 different defensive backs and spent money on 3 different veterans? That's on Caldwell

This team is so average to below average across the board you could pick any head coach an we're likely to get out played any given Sunday. There is no one unit above average on this team, I can't even name a position we could argue is above average on the team. That's all on Caldwell.

1. Joeckel's not awful, but he's not where he needs to be. Aside from Robert Mathis putting him on his butt yesterday, Joeckel's shown improvement this year under Marrone. More on that later.

 

2. If McCray hadn't fallen off the face of the earth, you wouldn't be saying that. Colvin has tons of talent, but he's not ready to start. Gratz is Gratz. You know what you're getting, and it ain't pretty. Colvin has talent, that's undeniable, but he's still a puppy that hasn't grown into his big paws yet. Brown looks like a keeper, and Sample looks like a guy who can apply pressure to Cyprien sooner rather than later if Cyprien regresses.

 

3. As strange as this sounds, if a GM replaces a multi-million dollar kicker who's clearly in decline with a UDFA and that UDFA doesn't work out, I'm ok with it--so long as a replacement is made as soon as it's clear that the UDFA doesn't work out. What I would fault a GM for is spending $3 million to replace a serviceable punter with an abject failure of one--a guy who had been an abject failure of a punter for years--then spending a third-round draft pick to replace said abject failure.

 

4. UDFA or not, Hurns is for real. The man's not particularly fast, but he just knows how to get open. The team still needs a true #1, but once his hands catch up to his raw talent, Hurns should have a role here for years to come.

Bortles is getting better protection, basically, and the result of that is that he looks better. As much as I hate to say it, both of those are the direct result of Doug Marrone's work with the offensive line more than they are the result of Frank "I didn't know what I was doing last year" Scelfo, Doug Olson and Nathaniel Hackett.

I'm ok with Dave, but i too have had it with Gus.  My hope is he turns it around and we have a great rest of the season but i don't think there's much of a chance of that happening.  What really sucks is if we let Gus go and our new HC hires a new OC, Blake is thrown into his 4th system in 4 years.  Ideally, we keep Olson and let him continue to develop.  Most important aspect of the team right now.

The second half against the colts was terrible. The offensive play calling was bad. The execution was bad. Gus doesn't seem to be getting the most out of his players. Maybe it's the OC's fault, but Gus is the guy it needs to start with.


Inexcusable to lose to an average to below average colts team with a 100 year old backup under center.
