I was pretty critical of this .gif in another thread...

 

But I think we may find out that this dude was hit really hard in the head...

 

That's the only thing that can explain it...  He saw the runner, the runner is wearing a different color jersey...  He must have had a serious impact to his head to get that lost...

People get killed over that type of lack of situational awareness in other job fields. The fact that Pierce had no idea what was going on for some reason speaks volumes.
