I never thought bortles was more ready, just that he had more experience in a pro style offense. The difference is the skill set. While mariota never had the traditional experience in a pro style offense, he has shown the ability to stay in the pocket with poise and go through his progressions and make good decisions. On the basis of skill set and ability, there is no doubt mariota was more capable entering the league than bortles, but bortles was more ready for a natural transition based on experience. He has more nfl ready talent and ability than bortles ever did, but not more pro style experience than him.

If you look at his per attempt numbers Luck has never been that amazing. He was a great prospect, and he's mostly been 'ok' to 'above average' but not truly 'elite. YPA is fairly low, completion % is so-so, he puts up big looking numbers off of volume. Personally I'd compare him to Rivers. He's as good as what you put around him, but he's not going to drag the team upwards. He will however beat the teams he's supposed to most of the time, occasionally win a big game, but lose head scratchers in about the same ratio. Also see his tendency for throwing INTs in playoffs. Not sure what it is but it's more than an anomaly at this point.
