They replaced him by promoting Dennis Allen, the person who has been calling the coverages up to this point already. That is a major head scratcher.

Allen was a defensive assistant under Payton for several years before taking the DC job in Denver and, ultimately, the HC job in Oakland. If part of the problem was that Rob Ryan was straying from the script or having behind-the-scenes conflicts with Payton (both were reported), dumping Ryan in favor of a trusted lieutenant who was essentially raised in Payton's defense makes sense.

I haven't watched New Orleans much, but what is the main problem? Is it personnel or coaching? How does a once great DC get to this point?
