Well, the same folks whining like jilted little school girls because the team won today will be crucifying the front office if they draft their savior, Bridgewater, if he turns out to be a bust.


One particular whiner who has an unnatural affection for glitter will claim he wasn't in favor of drafting Bridgewater the second after he's drafted by the Jags so he can hedge his bets. It's what she does.

I expect Dave Caldwell to know 1000x more than people on this message board.  I'll have faith in what he does, up until it doesn't work.  And I don't see how that's a bad thing.  If he picks Bridgewater, and he busts -- then that's on him.  I'll admit to being wrong.  I wanted Geno Smith last year, and ended up wrong.  I may end up being wrong again.  But I'm also not a professional.  I've never claimed to be.

Great way to put it. I concur. If Bridgewater sucks for us, thats easier to take than having him blow up and be a stud on Houston just because we were dumb enough to win a few late season nothing games that didn't improve us any in the long run.

There's no guarantee that Winston comes out next year.  And three years of sub-4 wins?  Are you really going to advocate that as a "A win is good!" person?

Winston will be absolutely be considered the #1 pick in the draft by everybody. His chances of staying are little.

 

Why are we talking about guarantees anyway? Tanker's are allowed to guarantee TB coming out, TB saving our franchise, TB being the only option for us if we want to be good, TB being gone sticks us with Henne/ Gabbert for another year.... Yet predicting Winston coming out is crazy talk.

 

Of course Im not advocating this, im just saying, if tanking is the right thing to do, why don't the tankers want us to tank for Winston instead of TB?

I'm not saying I disagree with the tanking crowd; I get the argument. I do. I wouldn't be upset if the team gets the first overall pick.

 

Its this idea that no one can be happy seeing their team win a game that gets me.

 

The draft isn't a guarantee. The first overall pick isn't a guarantee. There's guys to build around all over the draft.

I don't think many (maybe one or two) are saying nobody can or should be happy with a win. You can be, go nuts. But for those of us who care more about stringing together playoff seasons, we know the difference between 1 win and 3 wins is only detrimental to that long term goal. Feel good about a win where we put up 13 whole points if you want, but it just isn't as important to me at this point as improving our odds of finding talent so we can stop being consistent bottom feeders in the league.

Exactly. The expectation of MOST fans is to see a young team improve as the season progresses.


I'd love to have the first pick as well. But, I also want to see the team I'm a fan of winning. If it costs them a QB who is hardly a guarantee to be the fix some people here think he is, oh well. So, we end up with a guy who instantly helps you with your pass rush. How horrible.


The team will still wind up getting a QB next year, and it's not impossible Caldwell can fix that spot as well. There's more than one QB in the draft next year, and having watched Bridgewater a few times now, I'm betting he's not even the top pick in the draft, or the best QB.


The funny thing is the whiners are acting as if we've lost that pick, which isn't the case. They simply aren't capable of enjoying a win. They just have to have something to soil themselves over.

But, like the queen, you say one thing now, but you'll be singing a different tune if the team winds up with Bridgewater and he turns out to be Jamarcus Russell. At that point you and the diva will be killing the front office for blowing the top pick in the draft.

I want more mediocrity.  I hope we win against the Texans again - and the Titans.  Let's draft around 6-8 and miss out on the elite prospects.   Whoo hooo, another decade of mediocrity!!

 

A single number one draft pick won't pull a team out of mediocrity unless there's already a good supporting cast in place.  Even then in can be a crap shoot (Ryan Leaf anyone?).  The best way to build a winner is to get a smart front office in place, draft well OVERALL.

 

If you go into seasons hoping to lose for a number one draft pick every year thinking that's some magic potion, you'll find yourself hoping the team loses every year.

Tbh after watching TB recent games, While he doesn't turn the ball over He hasn't been super impressive either. But at the same time the talking heads said it's because team's he's been playing against lately are more defense oriented and they're taking away his deep options and making him throw short.

The people upset about a win seem to be operating under the assumption that certain college prospects are guaranteed locks to be studs in the NFL. They aren't. If there was a redraft of every draft in history, none of them would have the players drafted in any order that even remotely resembles the original order which is an indictment on just how difficult player evaluation is. I understand having the top pick come draft time would be better than having the 2nd or 3rd pick, but with the historical uncertainty of the draft I'm not taking away any joy out of a loss or pain from a win and I would encourage you to look at it in this light if you aren't already.


If you're focusing on the draft position of the Jaguars and basing your emotional response to wins and losses with that in mind, wouldn't rooting for divisional rivals to win their games so they have a worse draft position next year also fall into the same line of thinking. You'd find yourself in a position where you are rooting against the Jags, and for the tacks, clots and tinhorns. Doesn't sound like much of a Jag fan to me.


Bottom line... Worry about the draft after the season. Allow the coaching staff and front office to do their jobs, hopefully we've got the right people in place. And for goodness sake allow yourself to enjoy the Jaguars' win today, they've been few and far between the last few years.


I really like that this team isn't giving up with the start to the season that we had. That is a direct reflection on Gus and a very good thing to see.

First of all, there was no personal attack. You say that you're happy with the win, then what are you complaining about? Do you see the confusion you cause your readers?

 

Now, to the two highlighted sections: Yes, I am happy with 3-4 wins a year. I would be a whole lot happier with 19 wins a year. I am not ambiguous about my wishes when it comes to wins. I don't play the "lose to win" game because if I ever did, I would lose any semblance of credibility, just as you have.

 

Second, You have crowned an unquantifiable asset as something quantifiable. You don't have a clue as to what the draft will bring next year. Hell, the guys that get paid millions don't. That's why your stance and theory is fundamentally flawed. Unless you're madam Cleo or something, you don't have the first clue as to who the successful players of the 2014 draft will be. To display the arrogance of proclaiming the "one player or bust" position, you show your shortsightedness, and lack of understanding of not only the history of the draft, but the statistical probability of the "every egg in one basket" theory.

 

Now, all that aside, I am not going to delve into this any farther. You view winning as a bad thing. There are some boundaries that should never be crossed. You crossed that boundary by saying losing would be better. You're tainted. You can't undo that. You sold your soul, my man. I feel bad for you.

Sure there's a personal attack.  Calling someone an 'insult to simple logic' is a personal attack.  As is calling someone 'tainted'.  It seems that so many people have to resort to insults.

 

What I'm complaining about is what this win could end up meaning.  I for one hope Dave Caldwell has the opportunity to choose any player in the draft, or to trade down if he so chooses.  It's something this franchise needs.  When Gene Smith was our General Manager, too often we were just out of reach for the better players.  Some bad choices were made, but I wonder how this team would be if those bad choices had been less of options when more obvious better players were available.

 

I'm not of the "Teddy or bust' mindset.  I'm of the mindset "Give Dave Caldwell all available options." If he passes on Bridgewater, I'm not going to be upset (unless Teddy turns out to be fantastic, while we still lack a Quarterback).  I expect him to, to quote our coach, DO HIS JOB.  You seemed to have missed the part where I said we helped put the Texans in position to make the best possible decision.  

 

I don't get how you can like winning so much, but be happy with 3-4 wins a year.  I'm happy if this team is competitive -- which it has not been much this year.  But 3-4 wins isn't going to make me any happier than 1 win when we're not competitive.  And I certainly wouldn't be happy with this team being a perpetual 3-4 win team.  For as much as you like winning, I don't see how you could be either.

Thats the thing - you hope to NOT be in this position again....at least not for a long time....which had we got the #1 pick and Bridgewater would have a high chance. 

 

Also, at 1-9 its a lot easier to have that frame of mind. If we're sitting at 5-5, no one is talking about tanking for draft picks.
