A Buerlein comparison....phenomenal.


He is the closest thing we've had to a franchise qb since Brunell, and in my opinion, Brunell was a system qb and the players around him made him look better than he was. I think Blake makes the players around him look better. No running game, terrible offensive line, but pretty good receivers and they work well together. To not give him credit where credit is due is pretty unfair. A second year qb breaking a 20 year franchise record is still impressive, regardless of your opinion.

The argument that his interceptions come because he throws 40+ passes a game can be said about his other statistics too. I like Blake and hope he is that guy for us. I just see a lot of silly mistakes happening that have to be worked out. We've lost many games because of crucial mistakes he has made. We've also won some games because of plays he's made and I understand that. Hopefully we see even more growth from Blake next year. Having a more potent run game will take the pressure off Blake and allow him to make better passes.

This year I feel like it has swung slightly too far the other way. He is playing pretty well for a second year QB, but not quite as well as his numbers indicate.

Playing from behind has inflated the yards a little.  Greg Olson having a phobia of running in the redzone has definitely bloated the passing touchdowns.

 

The year the record was set (2010), we had 26 passing TDs (23 by Garrard). Blake is on pace for 32 which is six more(duh). However, the 2010 team as a total had 40 TDs (26 passing and 14 rushing). We are currently on pace for 34 total TDs (2 rushing and 32 passing). So if we ran the ball at a normal rate, Blake would finish with around 20 TDs (34 Total TDs-14 Rush= 20 pass). 

 

20 is definitely an improvement, but not some record shattering all star season.

Points duly noted, although I would comment on the bolded line to dissent. We can't run nor pass well in the red zone. So how exactly are BB5s TD numbers being inflated just because we suck even worse at running? Dare I say, I doubt very many of our passing TDs this year have actually come from within 20 yards. Still, it doesn't invalidate the rest of your points. We stink equally in the bonus whether its running or passing so I don't necessarily think that's any way to qualify Blake's effectiveness.

Maybe Bortles isnt smart enough when to throw it and when to play another down. By year 3, this should not be a reoccuring theme any longer. I hope he works out, God knows we cant afford anothet terrible QB

Been a fan since the jags began in Jax. I've seen all the players and coaches come through here. I'm not saying Blake isn't good. I'm saying let's stop attaching these franchise records to his name to try and prop that up. The records here are small compared to most other teams. It's like saying Steve Beuerline was good because he set 15 franchise records his first year (hopefully you understand why). Again it's not to discredit Blake, I just find it funny that the records are a validation to his greatness.


I do think Blake is good. He still makes a lot of mistakes and bad decisions. Some of it is due to youth, some of it is just bad all around. He definitely needs to improve quite a bit and I hope it happens.

I'm not sure the excitement is the 23 touchdown mark (which is a joke), its the fact he could validate the team mark in the record book. 23 sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everyone else, his current pace is 32 which would at least remove one black mark against us.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

Completion % will improve YPA. 

 

In years past I would agree with the previous QBs % and YPA being low being blamed on the receiving group. Not this year. The amount of throws that ARob and even Hurns and Walters have flat out bailed out Blake evens it out.

I feel like going back and reading your defense of Gus Bradley. I find it odd that you feel the need to ignore certain stats and try to temper the obvious enthusiasm for a qb that in his 2nd year is showing that he is capable of being a franchise qb, while at the same time ignoring all the facts that show a legitimate concern for a coach that isn't getting the best out of this team.


How do reconcile that? What allows you to have questions about bb5 and yet not have any concerns about Bradley? To me it's the exact opposite. Blake has done well enough to be excited about next year, while the way Bradley has handled this season, I am dreading the idea of him coaching the Jaguars in 2016.

I want him to improve that area. Before, it wasn't really a concern and I would make excuses for the bonehead plays. Now, I really can't excuse it. That's all I'm pointing out. Feel free to keep saying words that never left my mouth though.

You were obviously frustrated when you made the OP. He does make a lot of crazy mistakes, but he's about to break every QB record we have in 22 years, in his second season, even with those mistakes, so that's saying something, no?

We're also in games because of the clutch plays he is able to make.  The plays he is able to make that no quarterback for the past 15 years has even come close to making.
