Odrick...a DL was hustling to chase. Telvin sprinted downfield despite there being a Titan player in front of him who could have blocked him. Evans was after the play. Gratz was just typical Gratz and took the wrong angle. Cyprien is chasing from the backside.The only one who looked "slow" was Colvin, who was on the other side of the field. Yet you find this clip to indict the coaching staff?

 

The one that stood out to me in that video was Gratz.  He could have got him had he taken a better angle.  The angle he took was horrible.

The tacks will become good again, but this time we'll be way better. Our offense is miles ahead of theirs, and there's a reason why they're ranked 30th. Our defense is filled with a bunch of bums that can't play at a consistent level and rarely do anything right.

If our picks aren't failures we can take this division easily. I'm hoping we get some key veterans for this defense. More players like House that know what they're doing and won't be out of position on every play.

Your are comparing the Jags defense to the #1 and #7 defenses in the NFL. I'm just saying our personnel is better than 30th. And San Diego is a bit of an outlier. The Jags defense just gave up four TDs to the 2-9 tacks. In any case, I don't think playing a soft zone and letting their best receiver Gates catch two TD passes in two minutes was anything but a coaching failure.


 

It's not like the Bears, Ravens, Colts or Eagles have great pass rushers or defensive players in general, yet they all give up fewer points. Branch and Clemons weren't THAT bad in previous years, and Ryan Davis still doesn't start while Chris Smith is inactive. 


 

Coaching is expected to develop players. Other than Marks and Abry Jones I haven't seen much, if any, improvement in the defensive players since they were first on the team. No improvement in Cyprien, Evans, or Gratz. Telvin's improvement was mostly last year. He led the NFL in tackles in two of the last three weeks. I would have listed McCray, but ... ???

 

Last season the poor defense was blamed on being worn out from too many 3 and outs. That excuse is now gone.

Actually I'm just talking about pass rushers for the purposes of that comparison.

 

I think with good coaching, the defense would be respectable with a pass rusher or two.

 

If we got another pass rusher to pair with a healthy Fowler, another DT, another LB or two and a S, then the defense would be complete and approach dominance-assuming good coaching.

That's been the point of the "Gus haters" in this thread. We don't have the talent to play Seattle South. Gus should have realized that in the preseason and adjusted the defensive scheme. Why didn't he?


We all know you want Caldwell fired months ago because he blew the roster up. But Caldwell has earned the benefit of the doubt with the offensive talent he has brought in. Caldwell admitted his mistake. Time to let it go and move on.


But we do not have and have not had the talent to run Seattle's defense, so at what point is our HC and our DC responsible for not changing the scheme to fit the players we do have?

I'm not banging the fire Caldwell drum anymore seeing the progress on offense gives me hope for now. But the defensive woes are on both Caldwell and Gus they can't just change the defensive scheme when we've brought in players for a hybrid defense for three years. We don't have the line to play 4-3 the linebackers to play 3-4 we don't have the safeties to play cover 2 so what shceme is going to solve our lack of pass rush and swiss cheese secondary?


I just don't see what any coach could do with our defense its below average across the board and in the NFL that gets you killed.

It is a frightening quote on so many different levels to truly comprehend.

 

It is an indictment on the talent level on the defense.

 

It is an indictment of the coaching staff, who couldn't stop a struggling offense led by a rookie.  How can you have NO ANSWERS for the 30th ranked offense?

Also on Myers. Scobee was rather shaky as a rookie, i remember him missing chip shots and other easy makes early on in his career. Myers has leg and can hit from distance, he's a rookie and still has nerves. let him settle down and work on it, we could make out like bandits on the kid if he can get a rhythm down going into next season.

 

I know. We see him reach his 5th PAT missed and it's like, "How can we keep this guy?" It's hard to cut him much more of a break even though his actual FG numbers are not that bad. That said, I noticed that Myers is only one of three Ks over the past two weeks to miss two FGs in one game. I was watching the Chiefs-Raiders game, and at one point the score was 20-20 because both teams missed a PAT, and then soon after the Chiefs Kicker missed a second PAT. It's unreal how many PATs Myers as missed, but it's just as unreal how many Kickers leaguewide have missed PATs since they moved it back.


 

I'd like to see Myers competing next year for the spot, and I'm hoping this offseason he spends a considerable amount of time making sure that FGs from 33 yards out are automatic. If he can do that, we'll have a good kicker on our hands because he's already one of the best over 50.

Again some here are seriously reading words into what Gus was saying. He merely meant that they used their entire bag of tricks to try and get to Mariota with their pass rush. It was a very specific reference being taken way out of context, and it had nothing to do with Mularkey.

Okay how is one draft, free agents and some rookie free agents going to wave a magic wand over a bland defense that is predicated on players being athletic.  I'm fairly confident the front office is going to give him another year and we will see how it plays out.  The defense has regressed from year one of his tenure to today.  With a better offense how is that possible?  Oh right we are scoring too quickly.

Talent level is just an excuse. A good coach gets the most out of the players he has. The Bears seem to be playing at least average on defense and they have less than or equal talent to us.
