But, yesterday was a loss contributed by more than just the defense. You know that. The offense was flat terrible yesterday except for a couple drives (one if which started in Falcons territory because of the defense). The defense held Atlanta to 2 FGs the entire 2nd half. The offense did not convert a single 3rd down yesterday.


The INT was not the sole reason the Jags lost, not at all. But, it was a critical one for sure. Those are the types of situations people are talking about. On the 1 yard line at the end of the half, down 11 points, ball security is critical. That play was a huge swing in the game. And the Falcons ended up with 3 points that had absolutely nothing to do with the Defense (Bortles actually made one heck of a play to stop it being another pick-6).


As you're stats up there, yes that is very good, and Bortles will/should get better. But, how about turnovers in his own Red Zone? You know, the ones that are given up deep in his own territory that leads to easy opponents points? It's easy to cherry pick the good stats.


Anyway, did you watch the game yesterday? Do you know of the play I'm speaking about? The offense looked like it did early in the season (putting up 3 points in an entire half,, 3 and outs,, Sacks and pressures,, dropped passes,, fumbles,, INT,, etc.).


The offense stunk.

 

 

Doesn't matter. The offense has consistently been good all season. The defense has consistently been bad all season. Giving up 50 points to (3-12) Mariota, giving up 34 points to EJ Manuel.....couldn't even get the Falcons off the field yesterday on constant 3rd and longs. It's embarrassingly bad but all 3 Gus Bradley season's have resulted in WORSE defenses than the year before. There is only 1 problem with this team and there's no telling if Gus Bradley will even have a better defense next year than he did this year!

You're right. The offense as a whole wasn't on point like they've been. The int, drops and Denard fumbling cost us. That was a complete team loss.

What was the difference? Falcons defense played MUCH better. Falcons were 7 for 14 on 3rd downs and Jags were 0-8 on 3rd downs. It all comes down to defense. The Jags can't stop anyone.

I actually thought he played well.  He had one bad play.  I just said this in the other thread but if your QB has to play near perfect ball to beat a team on a historic losing streak, then you've got major issues.

The offense has gotten much better in the last half of the season. It wasn't very good in the beginning quarter of this year, and was not good yesterday. It wasn't good in Thursday night game against the Tacks either. So it hasn't been consistently good all season, that's not true.


The defense gave up 27 to EJ Manuel, which is still alot, but we've discussed that before.


Wiz cause 7 pints against the Tacks,, but you know that.


Remember in previous years when the offense (pre-Bortles) could not do anything, and the complaint was always that the defense got gassed? I think that came into play somewhat yesterday. The defense kept stopping the Falcons, and the offense would give the ball right back after stalled drives. It took its toll. Holding the Falcons to 2 FGs in the 2nd half was pretty good. That last long drive they gave up was bad, but they still held.


Team loss. Offense stunk.


But yes, the defense has been the main issue for most of the season, I do agree with that.

Coming from one of the biggest idiots here, that doesn't mean much.  I think Bortles is going to be a fixture at QB for this team for a long time.  But to hear you talk about him...I expect to see him walking on water soon.

 

He's got some improving to do and he needs to cut down on the dumb mistakes.  I absolutely do not agree with his decision making at times, and if you can't see his flaws I seriously question your intelligence.

Like I said, not an easy catch, but it did hit his hand. Would have been nice if Bortles had the composure to realize he was uncovered and made it a little easier of a catch for him, but Bortles is 23 and Thomas is a former pro bowler, Thomas needed to make the play.

His INT's are frustrating and don't help, but the point is we've lost games when he's thrown for 4 and 5 touchdowns. Obviously he's the least of our worries.

I wasn't implying that Bortles was our big, bigger or biggest concern.........of course the team has much larger issues to deal with. But the QB has to quickly learn to protect the ball, especially in the red zone. He is, at times, too predictable, and teams that study tape will use those tendencies to their advantage. I've seen several pick sixes where it was obvious that the defender knew where the pass was going. I don't care that his " interception percentage " is average.........an interception on the opponents side of the fifty yard line doesn't carry the same impact as a pick six, or an interception run back to the 15 with 2 seconds on the halftime clock.

This wasnt a tipped pas it wasnt a bobble or a bad hop it was a horrible decision horrible pass and we are a jeremy parnell recovery away from talking about a total meltdown.


Ofcourse blake is the future. Part of that future is understanding that even the best defenses give up 20 to playoff caliber qbs.

The best defenses? You're comparing the best defenses to our defense? The Jags have held just TWO opponents under 20 points the ENTIRE SEASON. It's scary that anyone in their right mind doesn't see that Gus Bradley in his 3RD SEASON has a 30th ranked defense. That's embarrassing. Bortles can score 45 points and LOSE. He can throw 1 INT in 40 passes and LOSE. He has to be perfect to win with a 27 ppg allowing defense. 

 

The Falcons were shut out last week. They were 7 for 14 on 3rd downs vs. our bad D. One of these days....as in the last 3 years, Gus Bradley and his defensive wisdom is gonna have to stop dancing and step up.
