Colvin is good.

Just not as good as everyone wanted him to be I guess.

Colvin isnt good yet, and Marks hasnt played. Thats why i didnt mention these 2. I have high hopes for Colvin, but hes still a liability.

I just think Colvin got hyped up by a lot of people after a good showing at the end of the season.

This year he took a step back, but I didn't see him get beat nearly as much as I saw Evans, Gratz, and even House out of position.

 

Marks played all of last year and was a beast, and he came back and played this year and when he was in the lineup our Dline played better than before and after.

The op has a very myopic view of getting pressure.

 

We are very bad at rushing the QB with our front four. Most of our sacks are the results of stunts and blitzing. When you have to use stunts and blitzes, you leave yourself vulnerable because you have to take people out of coverage or move linemen out of position. If you don't get home, you leave gaps in your coverage or open areas for screens at the LOS that can be exploited.

 

That is a big reason for why teams are able to gash our defense in clutch situations. It's been a pick your poison situation for the coaches all season.

 

If you don't stunt or blitz, the QB has time to pick the defense apart. If you do, the OC will design plays that attack the areas of the field you vacate.

 

It's a lose lose until you get better pressure with the front four.

But get outta here if you think we need to focus primarily on rushing the passer.


I bet any of you, including myself would trade Seattle's or Arizona's defense for ours without hesitation.


I bet you didn't realize Seattle and Arizona both have 35 sacks on defense this year.


The Jaguars have 34 sacks! 1 whole sack away from having the same number of sacks as the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Eagles.


The Bucs, Ravens, and Redskins have 34 sacks each, which ties them with the Jaguars.


We are getting to the QB.

There should be a stat for average time allowed in the pocket. For the sake of gauging pressure, i think it would be a whole lot more accurate than sacks. I wonder what the actual average would be, probably like 1.75 sec for top tier teams, the jags wuld be up in the minutes though.

Brees has torched the Jags for 400+ yards in all 3 meetings.

 

Cbs can't cover that much yardage a game. Defensive lineman decide how much your Cbs have to cover by rushing the passer.

Most of the "elite" QBs have the ball out of their hands before 3 seconds...

So... I'm willing to bet the best pass rushes are close to a 2 second mark.

 

Ours was clearly allowing 4, 5, and even 6 seconds....

sometimes it seemed like hours of time. All day.

Ok, If you wanted to talk about sacking the qb why wasn't that in your post title? Instead you said can't rush the passer which is what everyone is complaining about not the sacks. So which is it? They aren't the same thing.

The pass rush is a big issue with the team. They get a few sacks, but that does not tell the whole story. Any QB lined up against us looks like Johnny Unitas. When you give up a 3rd and 30 and it turns into a touchdown, you have problems getting to the QB. 

 

Part of this is on Bradley for not jumping on this early when Fowler went down, along with a few guys like Marks. We dont have the personnel to run Bradleys scheme at the moment, he should of adjusted it and played players with a bit more fight in them. No reason why Ryan Davis and Chris Smith were not played more, they should of been on the waiver wire looking for anything to help the unit. 

 

Pass rush will be addressed in FA or early in the draft.

I posted this awhile back...but go take a look at the stats breakdown for this team. We are having to scheme greatly just to affect the passer. Our leading sacker is Odrick, who is supposed to be a run stopper LDE but we shift around on obvious passing downs. Our next leader is Colvin, who we blitz out of the nickel spot. He is co-tied with Branch at 4 sacks, two of which were from one game IIRC.

We have no pressure and they're able to pick us apart casually. Our sacks are from blitz plays that somehow worked out, and some lucky plays by Andre Branch. Not to mention Colvin had the most sacks for a while. We have to put pressure on QB's consistently so we can get them to make mistakes, and hopefully our DB's are in position to make a play. The problem is we're running a zone scheme and there's a ton of holes in the defense that open up if given enough time, and that's exactly what happens every game. Our DB's besides Colvin and House are below average and need to be replaced, but we actually need a better pass rush before that. Hopefully we can get Norman in FA, Trumaine Johnson, Tashaun Gipson, Janoris Jenkins, or Eric Berry. Pair one of those guys up with House, Colvin, Ramsey or Hargreaves and we have something special.
