Based on Dave's press conference this afternoon, he alluded that he will be very aggressive this offseason. On top of this, he stated that an improved pass rush would have helped the secondary and that you can't count on Fowler to be the sole answer to your pass rushing problems.

 

After watching that Texans game and seeing what a good pass rush can do to disrupt a team, should Dave go all in on improving our pass rush? Watching Houston disrupt our offense was seriously one of the most frustrating things I have seen. Just imagine us doing that to another team with our current, explosive offense.

 

For instance, let's say Dave opens up the checkbook and is able to sign an Olivier Vernon and a Berry/Gipson/Weddle type to play FS, would you be willing to trade up to snag Bosa?

 

Let's assume Tennessee goes Tunsil 1st, and Cleveland decides to go QB. We could attempt to swap 1sts and give up a 2nd with Cleveland to get Bosa. San Diego most likely go QB and depending on what Dallas does they may or may not draft a QB either. Cleveland could pick up a 2nd and still get their QB while we greatly enhance our pass rush.

 

Parting with a 2nd could be hard but just imagine a D-Line rotation of Fowler, Vernon, Bosa, Odrik, Marks, Miller, Alualu, Davis, Bennett, and Jones. We could also roll out this lineup on passing downs:

 

LEO - Vernon

DT - Odrik

DT - Marks

DE - Bosa

WLB - Telvin

MLB - Poz

OTTO - Fowler

 

Man, oh, man. Sure we could hope Bosa falls but as it stands right now, it seems highly unlikely that Bosa would fall past 3. With the rest of our picks, we could pick up another CB, OLine depth, another TE, etc.

 

A lot can change between now and the draft, but what say you right now?

I think its more likely than in past years. 

 

We have targeted needs and there are a couple blue chip players at those positions this year. (Bosa, Ramsay)

 

I also think we will go heavy on defense in free agency which will make landing our targeted players even more important.

Yeah, Miller would still start at NT. The lineup I posted would be on passing downs such as 3rd and long. Dave said his plan going into this year was to predominantly use Marks on 3rd downs so I would slide him and Odrik to the inside in our "lightning package" on steroids.

I honestly don't think Dave is willing to give away a 2nd round pick to trade up for a pass rusher or Dlineman.

From his words, we may think he'll be really aggressive in free agency, probably with more than one pass rusher (Vernon, Williams if he gets cut, Wilkerson etc) and a great safety (Gipson, Weddle...don't think Berry will be available unfortunately).

 

He also said the draft appears to be loaded with great defensive linemen and linebackers so I guess he'd stay put to take Ramsey (if we don't get a FS in FA)or stay put or eventually trade down for a Dlineman or linebacker if we got one of the above mentioned safeties.

I guess that judging after Free agency we'll have a good understanding of where we'll go with the draft.

I don't think it's worth it to go up from 5 to 1. There are some good players that will be there at 5.

Why aren't you sold on Joey Bosa? He is the best defensive player in college football. In fact he has been the favorite to be picked #1 overall for months. The reasons are pretty obvious to anyone who watches Ohio State games.

I think that 2nd is more valuable to us than whoever we'd trade up for.  For a 3rd I'd consider it.  I don't think we have the luxury of being able to give up a 2nd with the lack of quality depth on this team.  Even giving up the 3rd hurts.  We're probably going to get a significant upgrade on our defensive line or in the secondary if we just sit at 5 and both areas need improvement.

Jadeveon Clowney was touted as eventual 1st overall pick material while he was still in high school. Would you go back to that draft and be more sold on him than Bortles? Injuries, scheme fits, personal problems, anything can happen. These are humans, not football robots.

It's a far more ridiculous stance to automatically assume a player will be a hit in the NFL, especially considering past experiences around the league. Doesn't matter who the player is or what school he's from, there's no such thing as a sure thing.


I'm perfectly fine with drafting him. I'm not so ok with giving up a 2nd or 3rd round pick to trade up for him.
