Lovie Smith fired

I was just out driving, out getting some gas, and my phone started blowing up. It’s 10 o’clock at night. I don’t now what is going on. I've always loved Lovie. He’s always been great to me and my family. I’ve never had a bad thing to say about him. I’m just at a loss for words. I honestly feel bad for my coach. This is unexpected. Let's be honest. Lovie Smith sucks. The only crazy thing about this is the timing. Despite some great players on defense, the Buc's defense has been atrocious. Those 6 wins were more about Winston having a great rookie year than Smith's defense. The consensus was that the Buc's defense would improve under Smith, but has been spiraling downward since his hire. 26th in the NFL allowing 26.1 points per game. Everything has gotten worse. Points per game was 21st in the NFL the year before he was hired, down to 25th and 26th in the NFL after his hire. Yards per game was 16th in the NFL the year before he was hired, down to 25th and 23rd in the NFL after his hire.
But, yeah, about that timing.... Makes me think either they got a call from an interested party or a team was likely to hire Koetter away. I think the obvious favorite is for Koetter to take over, but it would be pretty interesting if somehow they managed to lure someone like Kelly, Fisher, Urban, or Saban away.
New signature because HIGH SCORE found the periodic table offensive. Pathetic LOL
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
Tough to find a breaking point for the #Bucs. Lovie Smith wasn't asked to fire coaches. They'd really only started meeting.

Lovie always has been a lame duck coach.
Something fishy definitely happened here. Maybe jimbo or some other splashy name became available, or my only other idea is like others have said, koetter was too valuable to lose and this is all they could do to keep him.

That worked well for them. Quote:This is why I like the jaguars patience approach Quote:Dirk Koetter will be named HC. Save this post. Quote:Ed Werder @Edwerderespn 1m It's looking like Dirk's going to be the coach. Which, would be pretty cool for us fans because it would give us a pretty-exact situation to compare the Jags to; defensive minded Head Coach oversees team with awful defense but on-the-rise offense stacked with talented young players at various positions. If the Bucs do decide to promote Dirk, they'll have chosen to believe their success was due to the OC and not the HC, whereas the Jags keeping the HC indicates they think the success is coming from Gus. It'll be real interesting to see where each franchise is 2-3 years from now and see which strategy was the right one; keeping the defensive HC who's overseen the awful defense but really good offense or just promoting the OC of the really good offense and looking for someone new to run the defense.
