Why weren't Caldwell and other scouts concerned with Fowler's explosion?

Quote:I think it is a very valid comparison.  Who are we to criticize what politicians legislate if we aren't even in the chambers or privy to the information that they have?  They have vastly superior knowledge than that of just us mere common folk.  Yeah, it is pretty sad that "professional politician" has become an acceptable reference.

I disagree that it takes a professional to have an educated opinion.  All it takes is an educated person to have an educated opinion.  The opinion may be less informed, but may still be the right opinion regardless.  Gene Smith has more experience and knowledge than 90% of the professional scouting community, but we saw what blindly following that man led us to.  There are a great deal many things that can be gleamed from watching television tape, you don't need every angle on every play, especially if the player is near the line of scrimmage.  Secondary is a lot harder to look at without coach's tape.
And I would still take Gene Smith (if I own a team) over any one of the posters ever posting on these boards.

Because as "educated" as any of us think we are by watching whatever "tape" we can find and listening to all the ex-players jargon on ESPN... we still know just a smidge of what it would take to actually be a GM.

Unless posters on here have ACTUALLY worked in scouting departments before.

Without that, no one opinion really should hold any more water than the other here.

But when you build up a reputation with your posts... it follows throughout all of your opinions. Good bad and everything else.

I'm not applying for GM of a franchise, I'm just adding my input onto a message board of like-minded individuals.  People can decide for themselves if I am a loon or not.  I feel that I've presented the facts.  Make of them what you wish.

I think the dumbest poster on this board could've outdrafted Gene Smith in the 4 years he picked for this team.

They could've used a dart board and been more successful.

The guy took a punter in the 3rd round for crying out loud.

He was all "clean cut and high character" until he was desperate and then he took the lowest character pick he could find.

You can have him.

My point remains.

As much as you (or I, or FBT, or pirkster, or anyone) "knows" we still know less that the Millens and Gene Smiths of the GMing world.

You don't have to be a professional (someone who is paid for their skills) to have an opinion, as educated as you may think it is...

but your opinion is not the right one, nor the wrong one I suppose.

But to even hint that ANYONE on here is even remotely close to being capable of doing the GM job... well, it's lunacy.

Especially the more hard pressed posters... the trollerific ones... the fry guys...

comedic.

And somehow BrklynJag still hasn't found a GM job...

And I disagree. Yeah, Smith picked a punter in the 3rd... horrible choice. And moved up to draft Busts.

But I still wouldn't trust the posters of this MB over a guy who's been actually scouting and in the biz.

Someone choosing Gene as a hill they would die on is pretty damn funny.

You could at least trust posters on the board not to pick a punter in the 3rd ,that much is certain.

When it comes to the numbers, the cap, and contracts I would be completely clueless.

However I am fairly certain I'm twice the talent evaluator or drafter that Gene Smith was.

How many draft picks did he make that are still playing in the NFL? I mean one is in the MMA.... He might have the worst drafting track record of GM.

Monroe, Knighton, Miller, Shorts, Blaine, AluAlu, Jennings, Prosinski, Branch, Marshall Anger? Is that it?

Monroe, Knighton, Marshall are starters. That's really it. Complete garbage.

No, there's a good chance they'd pick someone worse.   At least Bryan Anger is still on the team.

I didn't say they would make the best pick I just said you could trust them not to draft a punter in the 3rd.

FWIW I had my fingers crossed for TY Hilton when we were on the clock in the third that year.  We needed a return guy something fierce and he was the one I had targeted.

So choosing a below average punter is better than taking a chance on just about any other skill position?

I wish you were a GM of another team in the AFC south.....

Hindsight.

Also, many people were mad at letting Jennings go, he had some success in NY and OAK.

Gabbert won more games than Colin Kap this year. Shorts starts for Houston opposite Hopkins, when he is on the field, I think.

Prosinski is starting too IIRC.

As garbage as they all may be... I think he had a bad habit of drafting guys out of position.

And I also think that he was awful.

I'm just sayin... real world talk... no one on here is qualified to be a GM. And therefore no one is really qualified to be TOO critical of the job done, in such a manner to act as if one could do better.

Like you say, it is more than just picking 7 guys every draft.

Caldwell is light years from Gene in that he hasn't made any bone headed picks, even if he's had some misses.... yet people want to complain about the job he's done because he didn't turn manure into magic in 3 seasons.

Of course we aren't qualified but that doesn't mean, if I was drafting for the team for 4 years, I wouldn't do better. There's no way I could do worse considering only 2 of his players are still on this team and Branch most likely won't be back.

If you just took Kipers or McShays we would be way better off and people hate them.

I'm not saying somebody couldn't have done better, because heaven knows Smith turned out to be awful, but you really can't look at other people's mocks and say so-and-so did better by looking at the players they would have taken.  The fact that every team's prior picks have a trickle down effect and will determine who will be left and what other teams would do, you don't know if whoever's player would be there.

For the record....'the Gabbert year' I was calling for Kerrigan or Watt in the first and Dalton in the second.  But I wasn't disappointed at the time because I was buying the hype that he could have gone #1.

It's easy when you're looking at a bunch of other peoples mock drafts or the experts player rankings though. It's not like anyone here actually came up with the picks based on their own research. Maybe stigma did.

With that said, Gene was horrible, yes.
