Dave Caldwell on Gus Bradley Show

#61

Quote:I have no issue with giving Gus a long term extension before the season.  The team is clearly improving, 5 wins > 3 wins, he deserves more time.  One fact that most of you don't realize is that coaches has zero impact on player progression and or the actual game, so keeping Bradley long term is the correct move.

Not one coach in the NFL could have gotten this team more than 5 wins this past season with how difficult the schedule was.

I hope this is sarcasm, if not you should just stop watching football.

That post would be the definition of sarcasm.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

Quote:So, ice cream with extra sprinkles all the way down the chain of accountability?

With the pressure of playoffs or bust for the Jaguars, if that is indeed the case, then I could see the ice cream and sprinkles getting taken away if the team is under-performing on the way to playoffs or bust.

I mean there has to be some sort of accountability if they are not performing up to their capabilities, so it might as well start with the ice cream and sprinkles and then just go on from there.

I'd hope so, if it's been all ice cream parties while the team continued to fail hard then there's something wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me. Gus has seemed way too comfortable with failure for it to just be coincidence, I doubt he's faced any pressure to legitimately improve up until now.

Dave needs to go right along with Gus after this wasted 2016 season going 4-12. This guy can't coach and even a novice football watcher can see that; not even sure of how an average defensive coordinator he is at this point.

Quote:If that is indeed the case, and I know there are several posters who believe that, the 2016 Jaguars will be playing under a whole lot of pressure to do something they haven't done since 2007.

A young team playing under that kind of pressure, it could get ugly.

The same thing goes for a HC in his 4th year who only averages 4 wins a year.

You are asking him to at least double his average win total to 8, maybe even 9.

A young HC coaching under that kind of pressure, it could get ugly, especially since there doesn't seem to have been any kind of pressure on him so far, at least from what I have seen.

You aren't wrong but I'd like to think the chances of that happening greatly diminish with an emerging top 5 QB and the most explosive WR in the league next year. Im no psychologist but I've rarely seen true talents like these break under season-wide pressure. Its usually in the postseason you see the pressure break at top talents (Manning) or Thrive like it fuels them (Wilson).

Edit: With that said, I cannot wait to see Bortles under playoff pressure. It just might be a sight to behold.

Can't wait to see whats next.

Quote:I found it interesting when Dave was asked if he thought that Gus having a 1 year deal made it hard to hire a D-Coordinator he responded by saying no and that just because there's 1 year left right now, it doesn't mean it'll be that way when the season starts. Do you think he could get a new deal before the season begins?

This was Dave spilling the beans on his plan.

Fantastic catch.  Now we know it was already in the works, and he let it slip on the show.

Everyone was legitimately surprised, myself included, when the extension was announced.

We shouldn't have been.

He telegraphed it here.  Something he really doesn't do.

Dave didn't slip, he knew what he was doing. Softening the blow, let everyone finish kicking their dogs before it actually happened.

It was discussed extensively on the radio shows as soon as the day after Dave's appearance in place of Gus.

Hmm... then I guess there's a lot of us who don't/can't listen to the radio shows as much as we used to.

Otherwise, we wouldn't have been surprised.  Mea culpa.  Different city, new job, can't tune in or listen to the recaps like I used to.  Miss those days where I'd recap the show for the board, but... no more unfortunately.

Understandable. I usually stream them at my leisure from the web site archives. When Dave said it, there was little doubt in my mind what he was talking about.

Are you being sarcastic, I hope so. The division was so brutal this year not one coach could have Got more than 5 wins and Coaches have zero impact on player progression. So you think he deserves a long term extension. SERIOUSLY? This has to be part of a new joke going around the office right? Right? Please restore my faith in humanity and our fanbase. Because If you think he deserves a long term extension it's just time to admit you really are a volleyball fan. He was given one year because Shad and Dave are apparently nice guys with a 100 year plan, who are out of their league at the controls.

Yes I do think he deserves at least a 5 year extension.  Our division was brutal this season, we had 3 teams in the playoff race well into December.  If you look at some of the level of QBs we've played this season, it's no surprise that we won only 5 games

EJ Manuel = Very Good to Borderline Great

Matt Hasselbeck x2 = Hall of Famer

Brandon Hoyer x2 = Great

Jameis Winston = Even though he's a rookie, he's a Future Hall of Famer

Marcus Mariota x2 = Even though he's a rookie, he's a Future Hall of Famer

Ryan Tannehill = A Top 5 QB in the league

Joe Flacco = Superbowl Winning, Future Hall of Famer who had a pretty healthy team when we faced him and beat him

Ryan Fitzpatrick = A Top 10 QB, who was healthy and wasn't even questionable to play going into the week.

That's over half the games against Great QB's

not even talking about Elite QBs we faced
