And need I remind you the last time we had a drafted punter and let him go in FA? We needed up with Matt Turk, think about that for a second; Matt Turk.

With the passage of time and a few therapy sessions I had managed to purge that name from my memory of all things Jaguar.  Now it's coming back to me in a terrifying rush;

Matt the Squib.

Matt the Shank

Matt the Single Digit Net

I'll probably have nightmares of those booming 17 yarders.....

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

And another weak draft class.

Woo.

Quote:A new contract should be viewed through the optic of what his worth is to the team now. Not something that happened 4 years and on which the man himself had no influence. The same thing happened with Alualu last year, was he worth a first round pick in hindsight? No. But he had a worth to the team and he was offered a contract fitting that worth.

And need I remind you the last time we had a drafted punter and let him go in FA? We needed up with Matt Turk, think about that for a second; Matt Turk.
I have already professed my occasional lack of wit regarding things football, so you're pounding the proverbial 'dead horse' here. Yes, I do remember Matt Turk... but I regard him as an anomaly who was put in a particularly bad situation from the start. For the most part, serviceable punters are out there; no, they might not be in the habit of pinning plays consistently inside the 20 yard line, but they are nevertheless useable.

My concern is if Brian Anger is worth what he's getting paid (and before I say anything else, I think ALL pro football players are ridiculously over paid). Is his pay comparable to other 'average' punters (because he is statistically only average)? If it is, then I see little merit (beyond the already discussed history of his being here) of not renewing his contract. If we let him walk, we could probably do as well with the next one... even possibly hit on a real boomer! On the other hand, it's also possible we could get someone who in a real game can't do better than Turk did.

That being said, and since this team has so many more important pieces to be concerned with than its punter, there's not much more that can be said.

... worrying about the punter... sad.

Bring in competition, if the competition is better, cut him.

Pretty simple.

While Anger isn't great, he is good and the Jags have way too many needs to worry about replacing their punter

He might cost as much as $2 mil per year. The team can certainly afford as much.

Isn't he one of the team's captains?

Why do you assume finding a new punter would be so difficult it takes away from improving the rest of the roster?

Thank you. I often hear this kind of crap like we should ignore some aspect of the roster just because we have greater concerns. Now I get it when we're talking about what to do first at midnight when free agency starts, but after that why not address any and all spots no matter how small. I don't care if it's competition for the long snapping or holder spot, if you can improve it, why not do so?

Yep.

Bring guys in, and who scores highest on the ST coach's scorecard wins the job.

Quote:Just for the record, I am cool with Anger coming back. I would, however, take King over him because he is terrific and pinning other teams down inside the 20.
The question is, is King on his own 20 when he punts like Anger is to get it inside the 20? Or is he around his own 40 or so. Anger boots it man, I am happy with him giving where he usually has to punt from. Jags will be stupid not to keep him and sign some free agent that won't give us the same results as they have giving their current team. We've seen it to many times.

I think we can do as well if not better by moving on from Anger. We're awful at pinning teams back inside the 10. It doesn't really matter with our defense though any offense will just drive 95 yards anyways.

No pain, no gain.

Pinning inside the 10 is pretty hard to do. At a certain point on the field, punt returners are told to let the ball fall and hope it goes into the end zone or takes a good bounce.

Losing Anger would be a special teams disaster. New punter and kicker.

The " coffin-corner " punt has become a thing of the past in the NFL. I'm amazed by the absence of expertise by today's punters. I see punter after punter kick the ball into the end zone when the line of scrimmage is the opponent's 40-50 yard line. That's a net punt of 20-30 yards. All that a punter has to do is punt. You would think that they would be able to hone their skill level to the point where they could angle a kick out of bounds inside the 10 yard line 90% of the time..

To be fair they have a handful of guys running straight for him, some weighing 300+ pounds.  It's not like he's out there by himself and the stadium is dead quiet while he gets to line up his punt.

That being said, I do agree to an extent.  You have one job really, you'd think someone that is on a professional level would be more consistent with this.
