I guess it's in some ways a win/win. If wash winds up being very successful then the jaguars found a gem and benefit.


If wash winds up being a bad hire, the jaguars will be rid of Bradley and likely will have a much more premier coaching squad replace him.


Gonna have to wait and see.

It was going to be hard from the start getting someone credible to come to Jacksonville to run the defense.


Gus could quite likely be in his last year if things don't improve..............and Jacksonville would not be a safe bet for longevity for a defensive coordinator if the Head Coach has one foot out the door.


My fear is if Gus goes so does the rest of the staff, which many think would be great..............but do we really want to hear a new HC come in and say we need to rebuild?


Gus is starting this season knowing it is win or lose and I hope this will motivate the staff.

Okay here is one of my concerns with this promotion.  HC Gus Bradley was known as a good Defensive coach & DC but its debatable about him being a HC & as a HC his defense has stunk for 3 years.

Now with Wash being promoted who will be the DL, I guess many assume that he'll still over see the DL as the DC like we assumed that Gus would over look the DC as HC but that didnt happen.

Here is the concern for DL not only because the pass rush hasnt been there but Fowler Jr returns, and FA or drafting of pass rushers as been said by the GM so whom will groom/coach this important talent?

 

I guess we'll find out if Wash will be a good DC or not, but who will be the DL coach?

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

My point was that is no excuse for the players having a learn a new system or that they don't fit the scheme. This is Bradley's hand picked coach, this is Bradley's defense, and Bradley fixes or we move on.

I'm inclined to agree with some posters on here about this pick...

 

*for starters, given that Gus is the HC and this defense is his defense, someone else would probably want to change it and there would be conflict right away.

*I don't see this as a promotion so much as just a title with the real function being scapegoat. I suspect that Gus will more or less be running the defense this season.

*given that this is Gus's 'sink or swim' season, and since it is his defensive scheme, it would be logical for him to run the defense. No more dodging the bullet if​ ​when the defense fails again.

There was at least one person in another thread indicating Wash was a "yes man," and that's why he was always the number one candidate to be defensive coordinator.

 

However, this was a quote from the T-U today that belies the servile charge...

Not so fast. Bradley has several strong personalities on his coaching staff and Wash and Walker in particular haven’t been afraid to challenge him. And this is where Wash won’t be Bob Babich Lite. Plus, I think Bradley will give Wash more latitude in making week-to-week game-plan changes.

I think as usual we're overreacting, but that's what fans do I guess.  

 

To me, the thing that matters is the players.   Coaches who have good players look great.   Coaches who have a weak roster look lousy.   It takes a long long time to build through the draft.  But that's what we're doing.   I'm actually pretty optimistic about the way things are going.

Highly doubt wash gets a head coach job after his first year ever as a defensive coordinator regardless of how well he performs.


The only way we will lose wash as DC to another team is if Gus gets fired.

As I said to JDub, there will always be a starter or two (or more) injured. It's foolish using Marks and Fowler as an excuse for the abysmal performance of the defense this year, especially considering the pathetic QBs of many of the opponents.


 

And we still don't know if Fowler is the answer at pass rush. In any case I don't expect much in the way of sacks from him in his first year on the field against NFL tackles. Very few pass rushers start out strong as rookies.


 

If we draft Ramsey it should be a major upgrade at free safety. That helps. But Caldwell targeted and offered overvalued contracts just about every major defensive free agent last year and we ended up with Odrick, Brown, and Skuta, so don't count on major upgrades from free agency.

There was no way the Jags would bring in that "big name" DC if Gus was going to take the reigns on defense. The more I think about him getting one more year to do so, the more I'm intrigued. His head coaching capabilities are sub-par.. But now I'm really interested to see what he can do with this defense if he's going to be the DC marionette.

The Jags had two starters miss most of the season in Marks and Fowler (assuming Fowler would have been a starter). But that's par for the course. Next year it might be Poz and Odrick. Counting on a near perfect roster to run your scheme is like buying a lottery ticket.

No one is "counting on" anything.  I was making a point about talent on the field vs. coaching.

 If the talent isn't there, it isn't there. Whatever the cause  may be - be it injury, bad drafting or free agent vacationers treading water.   

 

And missing you're two best prospects for pressuring a quarterback for a combined 28 games is NOT par for the course. That's Tiger Woods hitting epic duck hooks off the tee all day and missing the cut.
