I live in MD so I've seen tons of Skins games.


Those dudes are good but they're not world beaters or stars by any means. They were very well coached.

Never said world beaters, but they have some good pass rushers in Smith and a Kerrigan with some solid pieces around them. Breeland I know had a very good year too. All I'm saying is even average defenses have epass rush. Our top pass rusher was Odrick that's primary job is a run stopper and isn't put in too many positions to getafter the passer. 2nd guy in sacks was one of our corners. Like come on, what do you expect?

Agreed on that...but was it possible to achieve defensively if not playing with leads like that Dallas team was?

 

That Dallas team was not overly talented, but because they played with leads, they were in predictable situations where teams had to catch up.

 

Jacksonville?  Not so much.  As such, the lack of talent defensively could more readily be exploited.

Babich? Look at what he did in college and for the Bears as DC. He was [BLEEP] everywhere he went.


Like I said a billion times as I know you are talking about Gus, Babich was playcalling and primary defensive coach.


Edit: Also who said he was a guru? He's a good defensive mind. If he gets fired I'm sure there will be interest around the league of him as a DC. That isn't his job here though. As a HC he's been poor so far.

Wash said what I wanted to hear.  And I'm glad the "tough" demeanor I noticed from the camp videos last year seems to be part of his coaching style.   The stupid mistakes, blown coverages and over-use of soft zones were tough to watch in 2015  -- and he seems bent on tightening that stuff up. 

 

Hopefully it's not just talk and he can get a few player upgrades, more disciplined play, and much better results.

We will definitely get some player upgrades. What I want to see is a drastic reduction in defensive penalties. We would make a big play only to give the opponent an automatic first down. A tough man is who we need to be our DC.

Exactly, if the Jaguars had canned Gus I could easily see them attracting top talent at head coach and coordinator positions. The roster has talent, and that's the biggest problem, possible candidates looked at the talent on the team and the level of achievement against a historically easy schedule and see a dead man walking at head coach going into 2016. No decent coach in their right mind would take that job, it had to be a promotion from within. Schwartz probably came just to enjoy the warm weather on the Jaguars' dime.

I don't mean like anyone in particular, I just mean the general desirability of the job now that the team has a QB on the roster capable of throwing 35 TDs in a season.

 

Three years ago the job wasn't desirable at all, guys were turning the team down for interviews left and right, that's probably why the team ended up with a clown for a head coach. At this point there wasn't any reason to hold on to him instead of upgrading the position. My only guess is Caldwell has already been guaranteed he'll stick around thanks to finding Bortles, and wants another top 5 pick before he gets a real coach in the building.

Or, you know, Caldwell still thinks Gus is the guy he hired. And understands (as a talent evaluator) what he gave him to work with on defense.
