Justin Blackmon

Losing Blackmon is the best thing that's happened to the Jaguars in a long time. If he hadn't smoked and drank his way out of the league, we probably wouldn't have drafted A-Rob or given Hurns such a big role. Instead, we'd be hamstrung waiting for Blackmon to come back from his latest DUI suspension.

Rodgers was drafted to replace.. Warner was just a bag boy that nobody really knew about. That kinda luck doesn't happen often.

Brunell and Warner were both unknowns who were developed. Rodgers was drafted as the replacement, but benefited from having time to develop as a back up. Other teams have been able to do this. Henne could have Tom House sleeping on a cot next to his locker every day. He ain't getting a lick better.

Would you think that ARob is at/above the level that Blackmon was at then? I would definitely say "yes".


That's what makes me curious about Henne. We know he won't be "starter material". That's fairly certain.


However, what we have seen of him was with a completely different lineup (much, much worse at O-line, TE, WR than what the offense has now IMO).


He's not gonna look like Bortles (BB is the entrenched starter, rightfully so). But I would think Henne would fair much better with the offensive lineup now as compared to 2-3 years ago.


Heck, that team back then even manged to scrape some wins. It would be better now IMO.

 

 

No... ARob's hands and route running are as good, but Blackmon was more dynamic with the ball in his hands.

Granted it is nice we have the young man Bortles to shine a bit and get behind, but Henne can be the pro behind the scenes. And also it would provide good depth for Bortles if he got injured- or likewise give Bortles the motivation to be more reckless, knowing that henne can back him up while he recovers.

Stellar?  Let's pump the brakes.  Serviceable?  That's more like it.  If the line is fixed, and we can develop a legit running game, I think we could absorb the hit if Bortles were to miss a game or two.

Resign Henne if you can get him at close to the vet minimum.  He knows the system, he's a veteran and even though he's a bit limited athletically, he should be able to fill in for a few games in Blake went down for some reason.  Especially given the strides the offense has made recently.  Now if somebody came along who was A) better on the field, B ) just as willing to play a backup role, and C) would come at a similar cost, then by all means.  I'm not going to hold my breath.  Why pay big bucks for a backup who might whine about not starting?

I can't see him getting anywhere close to that this time around, although you never know for sure.  It stands to reason that any backup significantly better (not sure there's anyone that falls into that category this year) will demand a significantly higher salary.

There are actually a few qbs out there that could take over a game and win should Blake go down. We really shouldn't take this attitude just because we know Henne won't do that.

There are actually some borderline starters hitting free agency. Considering the Jaguars need to spend quite a bit to reach the cap floor, we could pay up for a quality backup than can definitely win games should Blake go down or struggle. Imagine for instance if we had Sam Bradford sitting in the wings when Blake looks over his shoulder.

Henne can play well enough to not lose a game. He is a great backup. I hope we can keep him around.
