Flint, MI water supply tainted by chemicals

Quote:I love natural gas and the advantages it offers, but I will never support any means of procuring it that involves fracking.

Fracking is fine in many areas, but not in most parts of Florida. The aquifer is too sensitive.

But that's just lip service anyway. There's no oil or gas in Florida except offshore in the deep waters of the Gulf, and that doesn't require fracking.

Quote:So.. what do all these politicians who bash the merits of the EPA have to say on what is happening in Flint, MI. They're still part of America, right? Every level of oversight failed that community and a whole city is crippled far worse than those impacted by a blizzard. Spoiler: nobody will be punished in any real way for this.

What is the point of the government, I personally think too many people have given up all freedom and concern & simply trusted that the Gov't will always do what is best for them (cough, laugh, cough).

I like Ben Franklin's quote on that.

When people make blanket statements Germany isn't using solar or the results aren't there, I feel it's important to prove them wrong. I know reading just a few sentences is a challenge for some, but theses facts are barely a month old.

Citing a release touting the success of solar energy from an organization dependent on continued investment in solar energy as "facts" is a stretch.

I haven't followed the story but it seemed as if MSNBC simply wants to blame the Republican Governor while not blaming the Democrat Mayor or Democrat President of the USA whom should have called in FEMA to assist the residents among the Army corps of Engineers.

It is very sad that the children of Flint, MI may already have irreversible brain damage due to the lead exposure.

I'll take these facts that show there is still a long way to go over the fiction being dependent on fossil fuels in any way makes us a safer or cleaner country. Nothing in this report contradicts anything I have read in multiple other outlets on this subject, but I give you an A for skepticism.

I agree there is still a long way to go. Right now energy storage technology isn't close to being ready for intermittent sources like solar and wind to be viable alternatives.

There is right now a non-intermittent cost-competitive alternative to fossil fuels, namely nuclear power. Recent designs re-use the waste products and would cut the final waste by 90%. Politics and misinformation has killed that possibility.

Eh, technically there's plenty of blame to go around at the state and local levels, not so much for the federal government really. It was Flint's decision to cheap out and go to a water source they knew was problematic that led to the whole mess, and Michigan's governor is the [BLEEP] suggesting that everyone in Flint should get a 30% discount on their water bill because the city knowingly pumped water that, you know, can't be imbibed into their homes.

I don't particularly want a nuclear reactor in my backyard, but I do think that they're a valuable tool for reducing fossil fuel emissions and lessening our oil dependence while we figure out how to make solar and wind work. It's a logical next step and would actually be a huge help in easing humanity's effect on climate change, but no one's willing to consider it because OMG CHERNOBYL.

Nuclear reactors release less radioactives into the environment than fossil fuel plants, even including Fukushima (here's a thought, don't build power plants on a shoreline that's prone to tsunamis). I doubt nuclear would do much to reduce oil dependence, unless electricity got so cheap that it was profitable to convert coal to petroleum, or someone invented a much better battery making electric cars more than just a toy for the rich.

And yeah, citing an obsolete Eastern Block reactor as a reason to avoid nuclear power is pathetic.

Heavy water nuclear reactors CANT meltdown because the coolant is essential to the reaction. If the heavy water were to leak out then the reaction would cease.

The Governor hired the EPA manager who oversaw the water contamination and did nothing about it until he fired the same guy a few months ago.

I don't think the governor makes the decision on what chemicals to put in the water, or what decisions are correct in regards to making the water drinkable. What about the Flint city manager and his office? This is where the decisions came from. Maybe it's because she is a democrat, oh and she has endorsed Hillary too. Idiots endorsing idiots.

Political party affiliation does not correlate with stupidity. Idiots are idiots regardless of what their voter registration card says. Based upon what little I've read, what happened in Flint was borderline criminal.

To many make it political though, and that has what this issue has become. Instead of simply finding out who fouled up where, punishing as needed, and cleaning it up it is a simply a blame game.

Blame the governor because he's the only Republican?

You really ought to read the whole story.

In sum: The Democratic government of a Democratic city destroys that city’s finances so thoroughly that it must go into state receivership; a Democratic emergency manager signs off on a consensus plan to use a temporary water source; the municipal authorities in that Democratic city responsible for treating and monitoring drinking water fail to do their job; a state agency whose employees work under the tender attention of SEIU Local 517 fails to do its job overseeing the local authorities; Barack Obama’s EPA, having been informed about the issue, keeps mum. Republican scandal.

There's a whole lot more going on than "The democrats did it! Thanks Obama!"

Complaints about Snyder's involvement revolve around how early he knew about the crisis and how he did nothing.
