Believe me, I had a very strong urge to give the Jaguars a Millen for this. By giving Malik Jackson a 6-year deal worth $90 million with $42 million guaranteed, Jacksonville has made him one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in NFL history. Jackson is certainly not one of the top non-quarterback players ever. In fact, he wasn't even a top-three free agent on the Broncos! He was fourth, behind Von Miller, Derek Wolfe and Brandon Marshall. 

Unfortunately, I can't award a Millen here. The Jaguars have a ton of cap room and really nothing to spend it on. They needed to overpay to lure players to their team. They did so with Julius Thomas last year, and that didn't work. Jackson has a better chance of panning out, so the Jaguars deserve the tiniest bit of credit for effort. 

Having said that, this is not a recipe for success. It's been proven time and again that overpaying in free agency doesn't work - especially when a particular player leaves a perennial Super Bowl contender and signs with a terrible franchise. Those moves have a very low-percentage chance of working. Making matters worse, the Jaguars will be asking Jackson to play in a 4-3 for the first time when he's always operated in a 3-4. Again, Jackson could pan out in Jacksonville, but his production almost certainly won't match his price tag.

To be fair, I don't think that's it at all with Walt.  He just doesn't understand free agency or contracts at all.  He's basing everything off of what he could do in Madden.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke. 

It's not like the Jags payed $5 million a year more than the 2nd highest bidder. the cap has raised that's where the market has moved to. There is a risk of a winners course but sitting on the sideline with those holes and cap space is not an option.

Because he played DE in Denver. They run a 34 and he played end, it's not really a brain buster.

It's not about paying guys. It's about paying the right guys. Trust the guy who's spent most of the past two seasons watching Broncos games, Jackson is the "product of his surroundings" guy. He's Dave Thomas, the cornerback who went from looking really good when paired with Fernando Bryant, Donovin Darius and Carnell Lake to being godawful with the Giants after losing those players around him. Without Ware, Miller and Wolfe pulling attention off of him, Jackson will struggle.

 

If we'd signed Vernon to an offer sheet larger than that, I'd be stoked. There are FAs out there I'd love to sign, but pursuing guys who were, in many ways, the weakest link on their team at that position and throwing monster contracts at them worries me. 

My best friend is a Broncos fan, I've also watched a whole hell of a lot of Broncos games. You're wrong.
