AJ McCarron blurb

Interesting...

per rotoworld:

NFL.com's Albert Breer spoke with one AFC college scouting director who believes Alabama senior QB A.J. McCarron is very similar to Tom Brady.

"Good size, outstanding touch on all throws, can make all the throws but only has average arm strength," the executive said. "Outstanding progression-read quarterback, makes throws to his second and third reads consistently. Doesn't turn the ball over. Winner. Mentally tough. Has the moxie and cockiness most great QBs have. Very similar to Tom Brady in stature, athletic ability, arm strength, touch..." These are all really positive traits, and obviously the unnamed evaluator is a fan. In fact, the AFC scouting director said McCarron could be the first quarterback off the board in May. Breer noted other circles see McCarron as a third rounder.

I'd say McCarron is more athletic than Brady, but...seems fairly accurate.

this is why i see the pats drafting him in the 2nd round.

So, would you be ok with McCarron in the 1st for the Jags? especially if we continue to win out the remaining games this season? I am leaning more and more that way.

I like that he is cool and calm under pressure situations.  Exactly like Brady in that respect.  You can't teach that.

I like McCarron and think he's an overlooked QB as far as potential draftees goes but I'm not sure if I'd take him in the first though

I agree that he is Brady as a draft prospect in that he should get a 6th round grade.

I see the Tom Brady comparisons in him. His mental grasp and acuity of the game overcomes any physical limitations he has. He's accurate, has a strong enough arm, and seems like he's at his best in pressure packed situations (see the throws he made at his own goal line vs. Auburn).

You wouldn't hear me complaining if we do draft him. The dude has some talent. Especially if we get someone to trade back with and select him in like the lower 20's, accumulate more picks, I'd be a happy camper.

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking....

and the cool thing about drafting McCarron would be you don't need to worry about losing games for draft position to do it. You can just enjoy the wins and the progression and still get your QB anyway.

With ANY QB we draft in early rounds, I want another one drafted on day 3 anyway - as another developmental prospect/ insurance.

I would be pleased to see him in a Jag uniform.  I think we as fans on the whole have become enamored with the spread option QB's.  They look great tucking the ball and running for a 7 yard gain.  I personally don't trust them to not get hurt with all that running.

I think the best mid first QB is Carr, but he won't fall to fififteen. I need to scout some more McCarron, but from what I've seen I think his biggest plus is his poise.

....and thats not a bad "biggest plus" to have. Can't teach poise. You either have it or you don't.

I like the fact that he's at his best in big games and big spots in games.

Has good size for the position as well. Accurate. Consistent. Used to winning.

There are a few QB's I'd take a chance on in the second round...Mett, Boyd, Bortles, and McCarron.  Of those four names, I'm highest on Bortles and Mett, but I'm starting to warm up a little bit to the idea of taking a chance on McCarron in the second round -- but definitely not in the first round.

I do love his poise.  I don't think I've ever seen him flustered in the pocket, though he's always had either an above average or -- in last year's case -- an elite line.  I haven't seen too many situations where a defense got consistent pressure on McCarron, which could be a testimony to both his line and him making quick decisions.

So yeah...a second rounder?  Worth the gamble.  But NOT a top five overall pick.

You mean the 99-yarder to Cooper? It took balls to attempt it, I guess, but it was a crappy throw.

McCarron's only knock is that he benefits from playing for Bama..ironic somewhat that he controls the team and leads them, but is then thought less of because he is the captain. He is intriguing to me. Havent seen a lot from him, throwing wise, but he does usually make all the throws when needed. Expect his stock to sky rocket after senior bowl and combine. As of right now I'd take him or Murray in the later rounds if available. Subject to change after combine/senior bowl

I actually want him AND Murray drafted by the Jags.

Take McCarron with the first rounder (hopefully after a trade down to gain some extra picks if possible) and Murray with a day 3 pick.

NFL.com's Albert Breer believes Alabama senior QB A.J. McCarron has chance to be the first prospect at his position to be selected in May.
"Enough people like him to where I think he has a shot to be the first quarterback taken," Breer tweeted. Even though we disagree with the evaluation, this result would not surprise us. McCarron compares to a poor man's Matt Ryan and is a "what you see is what you get" type prospect. We have read other evaluations that put him in the third-round range. Dec 2 - 2:01 PM
