I share the same sentiments as Bullseye and others; this class could go down as our best ever, but isn't yet at that point.


The great parts about the 2014 class, to me, are that we finally were able to successfully draft a QB and a WR. After Leftwich, Gabbert, Soward, Williams, and Blackmon, I was starting to wonder if we were forever cursed at those positions.

Part of the very reason I included Rob Johnson in the 1995 class are the picks he returned in trade, which led to the 1998 selections of Fred Taylor and Tavian Banks.

 

As to that 1998 class, I really wanted Charles Woodson that draft, but was glad we didn't get Enis.  Taylor was a GREAT consolation prize.

 

I immediately loved the DD pick, but the 2nd round disappointed me because I wanted to trade up to get either Dre Bly or Samari Rolle.

 

But yes you are right to rank that 1998 class over the 2006 group.

Apparently JDR wanted Suggs and Shack Harris wanted Leftwich.  Had we taken Suggs, there's a good chance we would have selected Big Ben the following year.

 

 

Well that's one rumor that came out after Leftwich and Shack were long gone. There were a lot of rumors blaming Shack Harris for draft mistakes and crediting Gene Smith for the successes. Considering how Gene Smith did, I'd put them all just slightly more likely than bigfoot.


 

Note that the Ravens, who ended up with Suggs, actively attempted to get Leftwich instead.

I always said it was. After this draft happened and I watched film on the players I didn't know, I knew it was a special draft. Plus I wanted Bortles and Robinson so bad that year. It could very well be the best of all time.

I actually posted that Bortles looked like the better QB during the UCF / Louisville game.  That said, I honestly have to say that I'm not sure I would have pulled the trigger on Bortles at #3 - I may have attempted to trade down and let one of the top 4 QBs (Bridgewater-Bortles-Manziel-Carr) fall to me at the end of the 1st.   

 

Thank God we didn't go after Manziel.  I think Shad would be building a stadium in London right now and our fanbase would be drinking every day as if it were St Patty's Day if we had drafted Manziel

Looking at that 2010 draft class is enough to make any Jaguars fan sick. I remember some Jaguar "talking heads" comparing Larry Hart to Dwight Freeney. That was almost as bad as when they compared Mike Walker to Jimmy Smith based on his pre-season workouts.

I don't see why Linder gets all this best lineman love off of one rookie year. He'll have to show more than one good go of 16 games before all of that. RG III was great his rookie year too then [BLEEP] the bed.

I mean, Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck were also good their rookie years that same year. That turned out okay. Linder played well in his second year as well until his injury

It's drafts like this that led to the Jaguars downfall. This is an entire waste of picks. I realize Alualu is still a backup on the roster, but that being true is in itself worth questioning plus there was some serious talent passed up for him. D'Anthony was injured right away and never played a whiff. Hart was the stiffest DT I've ever seen, and there's no chance he could even think of playing DE. Lane was nothing special. Karim was one of the most fragile players I've seen in that he was absolutely terrified of contact, and that included blocking, and they actually drafted McGee? This is as bad as it gets.


 

Then again this entire draft pales in comparison to how bad two particular moves were, and that was moving up for Derrick Harvey, and even worse, moving up for Blaine Gabbert before passing on JJ Watt.
