Missed the Bama game this past weekend.  In looking at the stats I just noticed the following:

 

TJ Yeldon - 20 carries 123 yards - avg. 6.2 YPC.

 

Derrick Henry - 17 carries for 37 yards - avg. 2.2 YPC

 

That's an unusual discrepancy between the 2 backs who have very similar stats this year (5.3 PYC and 5.1 YPC).  Any reason for the difference?  Did Bama utilize Henry between the tackles and Yeldon on the outside?  Just curious -- Henry looked unstoppable a week ago.

 

Not a big fan of Bama but I'm sure Saban will fix it in the future.  Thanks !!

yeldon is a complete back and henry is really limited in his skill set. as a defense, you pretty much know what henry is going to do when he is in the backfield. bama isnt running him on stretch plays or to the outside like we keep doing with gerhart....

 

so its easy to key in on henry and shut him down.

Ole Miss has possibly the best all around defense in the NCAA. They had to secondary talent to take away Cooper (90 yards no tds is very good to numbers to hold Cooper to) and focus on stopping the run. Yeldon and Cooper are going to get some numbers every game but against Nkemdichie and Co the once dominate Bama line had their hands full. Fun fact, through 5 games, Ole Miss D has allowed only 3 touchdowns

Yeldon has really improved this year under Kifen. He was a fumbling machine in big games last year. Henry is on then off. I am not real sure about him as I was earlier. I am watching Gurley very closely now. If he don't get hurt he may win the Heisman.

 

He may be our top pick. Don't laugh.

The thing that worries me about Yeldon is the lack of breakaway speed.

 

The game at Indy, he had a run in overtime that would have been the winning TD for most elite backs. Yeldon was caught by one of their DB's.

And I can't help but think that is the reason he wasn't a top 15 pick. If he had gamebreaker speed, with his balance and vision he'd be the second coming of LaDanian Tomlinson. But he don't, so he ain't.

TJ has the running style of Le'Veon Bell.   Once TJ gets some holes opened up, he should be able to average ~ 4.5 YPC.   The funny thing is you really don't see Le'Veon breaking long runs either.  I think Le'Veon is slightly faster but in general, they have comparable 40 times.

The problem I have with Yeldon was how he falls every time he makes a move. Throw in no breakaway speed and his 2 rushing TD's last year and he's actually one of the worst starting RB's in the league.

Falls down when he makes a move? Yeldon excels at making quick cuts in a tight space. He has a fairly unique ability in this respect. While he isn't a breakaway guy, you don't need to be. He does have good speed though. His game is about quickness.

6 years in the NFL and you average over 4.6 yards per carry would rate you very good at least.. IMO... i dont know I was very liberal with good ratings.. elite in this sense means Pro Bowl level nothing more..

most have him ranked around 20-25th best NFL RB in the league in regards to Fantasy points & what not.. .but if he's healthy and getting the ball 20 carries a game on average he'll be in the Pro Bowl this season..

around 1,450 yards maybe..
