Isn't there a little conspiracy theory about a certain element in the Jacksonville power structure that oppose any attempt to improve the city because they don't want Jacksonville to be known as anything more than a stopover on I-95 on the way to Miami?

The other side of that is the very conservative religious group that owns half of downtown doesn't want any "seedy" lifestyle activities here.

 

They're good with homelessness and blight, but you best not have any liquor down here.

I've heard it was the movers and shakers further south. If the truth be known, Jacksonville residents are their own worst enemy. They want Macy's service and infrastructure on a flea market budget. I'm the last guy to promote higher taxes (just paid $2700 to Uncle Sam). But I also realize that if you want anything nice it has to be paid for with accountable oversight. Jacksonville is in a historical rut of lazy and cheap.

I heard, or read, somewhere that Orlando, Tampa, Miami, etc, are perfectly happy with Jacksonville's status quo. Less money and time spent here means more for down the road.

I think the FBC argument is still valid but waning more every year. Younger people are less likely to attend and are more tolerant.
