Barnwell on Bortles

Quote:This. QBR is just ridiculous. This pretty much sums up my thoughts.
Quote:The first half makes some okay points. The rest is all based on the moronic QBR stat. More than that, the article seemed written to reach the specific goal of the writer, which was to figure out how to make Bortles' season seem as unimpressive as possible. When he brought up the stuff about throws that should have been intercepted and the 50-burger colts game I knew the guy started "researching" that article already knowing what his conclusion was going to be.
It seems like ESPN created a metric and went with it without actively seeing how it worked in real life. Now,they have a screwy system, but can't admit they jacked it up and therefore they continue to try and justify it with articles throughout their media empire.
“It is the job of thinking people not to be on the side of the executioners.”

talks about the lack of pass blocking, talks about receivers bailing him out, talks about playing from behind and how its easier in garbage time.
Fails to mention the complete lack of a running game, or an injured Thomas first half of the season, or how when you are playing from behind you pretty much have to give up on the run game that isn't effective anyway making it easier for the defense. The guy was asked to carry the offense with a crap line throwing to 2nd year receivers. He led the league in Tds and put two 2nd year receivers over 1000 yards and 10tds. I hate "reporters/writers" who refuse to open their eyes and instead use numbers to stop what their eyes should be telling them
Go Jags!
*To stay up for atleast 2 years 3/6/17 2016 draft players I think will be good

I have been a bit concerned over Bortles performance when the game is close vs when we're playing catchup. But the moronic "QBR" gives him a lower score in the latter situations when he's putting a good chunk of his numbers. These nerds have yet to perfect "advanced metrics". I do have slight concern that Bortles won't continue to develop and become the franchise passer we need, but not anymore after reading the article than before.

The way most of the anti Bortles articles are written you'd think guys are putting up 30+ TDs on terrible teams thanks to their teams being terrible and losing badly all the time.
QBR is total junk. But saying that Barnwell's analysis isnt way off base. The NFL is all about turnover margin and Bortles threw way too many picks in tight games. He needs to fix that. But you dont need a bunch of bogus QBR stats to figure that out.

Quote:QBR is bad, but Bortles was also average by the good analytics like DVOA and ANY/a too. He needs to, and can, get better for us to take the next step. That's not really a controversial statement. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
The key for Bortles is a fast start and more short passes to up his completion %.
Quote:More than that, the article seemed written to reach the specific goal of the writer, which was to figure out how to make Bortles' season seem as unimpressive as possible. Standard ESPN. Guy does make some valid points just the other half is all QBR gibberish.

Interesting article, but I tend to rely on the eyeball test more than anything. What I saw was a very inexperienced QB who had to be aggressive because we were behind in so many games, and who didn't have very good protection as the opponent knew we had to pass.
Everyone knows he needs to get better, but very few QBs hit their peak in year 2. With a better defense and a better running game, he could be the exact same guy and look a lot better.
People are 50/50 when it comes to Blake's performance in 2015. Most people claim it was garbage time, etc. I am not blinded with teal colored glasses or homerism though. I think you have to consider that he's been sacked over 100 times in just 29 NFL career starts. You have to weigh in the fact also that he wasn't supposed to start his rookie season, that he was a Jr. coming out of UCF I believe (Correct me if I am wrong). He goes out there with virtually no running game his first two seasons. And in 2015 let's not forget that he was trying to also learn a new offense with 2nd year receivers around him and with a banged up offensive line. Again, I am not expecting this team to be in the play-offs in 2016. I am happy if we sniff .500 and break even at 8 - 8 or even 7 - 9. The defense needs to start pulling it's weight. The running game needs to show up. And the pass protection needs to improve. In my honest opinion. Bortles, Robinson, Hurns, Thomas, Greene and Lee if he can stay healthy will continue to show up in the passing game. They're the LEAST of my concerns on this football team. And it's been a DECADE since I've been able to say that about a Jacksonville Jaguars offense. We just can't catch a break. When we have the running game (MJD/Taylor) era, we didn't have the QB and firepower on the outside to balance it. Now it's the other way around.

I hope this doesn't come across as overly defensive, but I, like a lot of other posters on here, felt like the article was nothing more than a way for Barnwell to prop up QBR and whatever new stat Football Outsiders has developed. He made good points, but it just seems like he's hating on a guy who he can't analyze via paper and pencil.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

To me it felt like the article was a lot of "Yeah, I know he had 35 TD's and 4400 yards...but his QBR is...". I bet the Bridgewater article will be a lot of "Yeah, I know he only had 14 TD's and 3200 yards....but his QBR is...".

What I saw was a very inexperienced QB who had to be aggressive because we were behind in so many games, and who didn't have very good protection as the opponent knew we had to pass. There were also a lot of halftimes where we said 'Man, if Blake hadn't really sucked this half we'd be in good shape this game'. When Blake was bad he was pretty equal opportunity bad IMO. Like the article said, he actually had a pretty stellar QBR when behind...he just dug us into a hole too often by starting out really slow. Even Johnny Ozone has made starting out faster the biggest area Blake needs to improve. Quote:The first half makes some okay points. The rest is all based on the moronic QBR stat.I agree, the QBR is an absolutely useless metric. If it's not transparent about what goes into it it's just arbitrary IMO. Also (circa 2011) when it rates Tebow going 4/10 for 100 yards and 1 TD as a higher QBR than aaron rodgers going 26/39 for 400 yards and 2 TD's i can't take it seriously. I still believe Yards Per Attempt and Completion % are the best indicators (albeit not perfect) for a QB. The guy in the article makes some okay points, but his reliance on the QBR and this quote: "That's the bird's-eye view of Bortles' season: He was better, and better was not quite good." leads me to not take him seriously since he's clearly never watched Bortles play...
Championship Formula:
1) Draft Trevor Lawrence! 2) Play good physical Defense! 3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy! 4) ??? 5) Blank #2 6) CHAMPIONSHIP!!! |
