There were also a lot of halftimes where we said 'Man, if Blake hadn't really sucked this half we'd be in good shape this game'. When Blake was bad he was pretty equal opportunity bad IMO. Like the article said, he actually had a pretty stellar QBR when behind...he just dug us into a hole too often by starting out really slow.

 

Even Johnny Ozone has made starting out faster the biggest area Blake needs to improve.

Yep, it's perhaps too cut and dry of a way to look at it...but single digit points at halftime against the Panthers, Patriots, Titans, Chargers, and Texans twice...and an even 10 against the Jets and Ravens. 

 

I could dig deeper on some other games and find even more examples...such as the Bills where we were blanked through the first quarter before two defensive TDs and another turnover by EJ Manuel 3 drives in a row opened the game up. Blake was again quite bad in that first half. 

 

Point being, starting out slow is a serious problem and where I pinpoint Blake's biggest stumbles...far more than falling behind and getting exposed while defenses were keying on him. Quite the opposite in fact, those situations were where Blake shined.

Bortles is a slow starter but the Panthers, Patriots and Texans had pretty tasty defenses last year too.

I agree, the QBR is an absolutely useless metric. If it's not transparent about what goes into it it's just arbitrary IMO. Also (circa 2011) when it rates Tebow going 4/10 for 100 yards and 1 TD as a higher QBR than aaron rodgers going 26/39 for 400 yards and 2 TD's i can't take it seriously. I still believe Yards Per Attempt and Completion % are the best indicators (albeit not perfect) for a QB.


The guy in the article makes some okay points, but his reliance on the QBR and this quote:

"That's the bird's-eye view of Bortles' season: He was better, and better was not quite good."

leads me to not take him seriously since he's clearly never watched Bortles play...

I remember that! Also this season where Rodgers went 14-22 for 77 yards and received a higher QBR than Brady who had 20-33 300 yards passing and 4 TDs.

Bortles needs to improve, but let's be honest.  QBR is a stupid stat.  It's a terrible way to measure a Quarterback and anyone using it is just an ESPN shill hoping to throw stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks.  A year from now if Bortles improves, this piece will be buried in a pile of muck and never mentioned again.  If Bortles doesn't improve, Barnwel will bring it up and champion it as proof that QBR is a fantastic metric.  

 

If he can get his completion percentage up, and his interceptions down, he'll make a damn fine Quarterback.  Experience will help him a lot there.  As will having a running game, and an O-line that doesn't allow 50 sacks a season.  (A running game will help that too).

The 3.whatever for the Colts game just proves that. People say the td pass to Hurns was telegraphed and poorly timed. Yet if Blake was Rodgers or Brady, they'd talk about how he threaded the needle with a perfectly placed ball.

Yup its completely ridiculous for him to say we beat the Colts dispite Bortles, when the guy had 3 td passes and 1 rushing td, yes he wasnt the only reason we won, but he was a huge part of it, that game all phases played great. But to dismiss Bortles when he was great is just dumb

That was a pretty interesting article.


My personal take on Bortles is that he is a heck of a competitor and a really hard worker. If he continues to improve at the rate he has shown so far he will become a really good player at his position. He is a natural born leader and seems to have a great bond with the Allen brothers. I will enjoy following him work at his craft and leading this team in the future.

Respect the game.  Play with a sense of urgency. 


1.)  Take care of the ball.  Win the turnover battle.

2.)  It's all about 3rd down.  Win on 3rd down to win the game.

3.) Playmakers make plays.  The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays.

-Not afraid to take a hit

-Short memory when it comes to picks.

-Will often go for a risky play over the safe option

-Very hot and cold

-Will always be prone to throwing lots of picks due to play style

I think that this is a very fair and favorable comparison. I agree with it completely. I think he's got a bit of Brett Favre in him too with his reckless abandon in both passing and scrambling. That's the give and take and love and hate nature that fans will slowly grow to love about him. Hopefully he'll get better as time marches on. Would I like to see him become an Aaron Rodgers type quarterback? Of course. But could I settle with him being like Eli Manning or Ben Roethlisberger? NO PROBLEM. I could live with that for the next 10+ years out of Blake. If we have a few play-off runs or Championship appearances/Superbowl wins with a stronger roster around him. I can live with a few 7 - 9 or 9 - 7 seasons under him. I really can. I don't think the avid fan expects us to be the New England Patriots for the next 15 years. That's a freak of nature occurrence that may never happen again. But if you can just give us a good stretch of "close but no cigar" and then an occasional "Okay! You've made it and you've won some big games and titles!" then we're fine.

I'm not an Eli fan, but I think that may be more because of how doofy he is. He's always pretty money in the playoffs, which again, I could see as a potential strength for Blake as well. He always elevates his game in higher pressure situations. If he ends up being pretty good during the season and lights it up in the big games/post season, I'd be fine with that as well.

Mistakes will always be there, but they become a lot more bearable with credentials, over time. Eli and Ben have earned that. Bortles is only in year 3, with his first solidly built team. I look forward to the progression.
