Who stood out v. Jets?

Quote:Love that this team actually has talent all around now. Compare our starting 2013 Defense to our current backups: Interesting and somewhat depressing. An amazing turnaround on the roster.

Jack looked quick and he clearly wants to hit someone. He got away with one when they picked up the flag, but Wash was right there and immediately coached him on proper technique, but the kid is a thumper.
Henne is going to be the backup this year, and that's fine, but the speed with which he goes to his check downs is pretty amazing. I guess he's trying to avoid taking a hit, but man, let the play develop! Night and day from what we saw from Bortles, and rightly so. The two big pass plays were breakdowns, the first with Telvin biting on the underneath guy, and then Poz doing pretty much the exact same thing. Like someone else said earlier, those issues will get cleaned up and we hopefully won't leave the deep middle of the field uncovered like that on a regular basis. Yeldon looks much more decisive, and Ivory is a guy we've needed for a long time. We need a back who can punch it into the end zone. He looks big, fast, and strong. Fun to watch. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Let's not forget that Gipson wasn't in there either. ![]() Quote:I like the way Blake looked so comfortable back there. He also should have had a TD pass but Julius Thomas ruined that. He should have caught it, but the pass was low and it didn't need to be. JT was wide open. You could see Bortles chiding himself after the throw. He shares some blame on that one.
I think Blake's ability to audible is something that can't be understated. He didn't do that last year. His ability to recognize the defense and get into the correct play was awesome. Also, his deep pass to ARob on the free play was awesome. That's what you're supposed to do, and that's what the Rodgers/Manning/Brady's do. We haven't seen that here in years.
Henne's checkdown prowess is unreal. He literally reads the shortest route and dumps it. My concerns with the OL are still there, BUT, it wasn't horrible for Blake and that was with the backup center and LG. Once Beachum and Linder are back it should be better, and I'm a little more comfortable with our first line of depth. They did great opening the running lanes.

Julius Thomas stood out for the wrong reason. Dropping a for sure TD on the first drive. The red zone is why the Jags signed him to a big contract. So he needs to step it up.
Interesting to note that the sack by Ngakoue came when Odrick and Jackson collapsed the pocket by moving their guys back. When Fitzpatrick couldn't step up, he stepped left and Yannick was able to shed the LT (Clady) and make the play.
This was something Caldwell talked about specifically following the Jackson deal. He won't always get sacks, but he'll make the QB run into them. Kinda' obvious I know, but still nice to see it happening.
Quote: I thought Yeldon looked quicker as well

Bortles: I don't know if he'll ever be the most accurate QB, but he needs to finish drives. He was great but the low ball to Thomas (who still should have caught it) was a bad throw. He was excellent otherwise and looks ready to go. My complaint is only to be hyper-critical
Chris Ivory: I'm loving this signing already, he has good vision and he's patient. He's going to add another dimension to an already potent offense Yeldon had a good night, I don't know who gets more carries but I don't care Lee - He's improved, had a good night, just stay healthy and keep making plays Joeckel - It's just not coming together, he just stands around, he has no edge to him. He does okay, he's technical for the most part but he's upright most of the time and downright lazy. Cann - He had some really impressive blocks, still struggles in pass protection but he's a solid contributor otherwise, I don't think we really have to be worried with him Shatley - He could be as good as there is a Center in this league. Outside of the 3rd down sack he gave up, he held his own with the 1's against Williams/Richardson, he was strong and knew who he was blocking. He recovers well too, he got beat a few times but came right back and kept his hands dirty to make blocks. Malik Jackson: didn't get to see much, but it was nice to watch the opposing teams offensive line going backward for once Dante fowler: I thought he was playing a bit down, he wasn't spinning off his legs as much, but he was the one who collapsed the pocket late in the 1st quarter, forcing Fitz to run right into Yannick's clutch. That sack btw was against Ryan Clady, not some scrub Yannick: I loved when he came in, lots of energy, he's a steal Cyp: He looks better, I know most people around here hate him, he's not the best, but he does a good job. He will benefit from the vamped up defense for sure Jack: I was salivating over his leadership with the 2's, he looks like a veteran LB when he is out there. I thought he froze a few times, the game is a bit fast for him, but he's confident and you can see the athleticism: I want to see him with the 1's at some point soon. I don't know if he will get any looks on the outside linebacker spots or be put in more blitz packages Henne: More of the same, bland, capable back-up not bad, not good Benn: He does what Sterling can't, it's a shame he's not bigger, he could be a TE, idk if he has much use on the team with all the talent at WR Sterling: I feel like he's a practice squad candidate, I don't know if he has what it takes to play in the NFL he had a bad night I thought, but i'll give him that he was working with Brandon Allen Koyak: Ben Koyak had a good night, he's going to push really hard for that 3rd TE spot and should make the roster ether way as he's gotten increased work with the 1's Brandon Allen: Horrendous, he looks so small, has a weak arm, he is extremely robotic and was so off target or behind on his throws. He had a very scripted night, he didn't even look at his receivers. Obviously this was his first NFL action but my goodness was it bad. He made the last minute exciting, but then ended his night by missing an open receiver and throwing a pick. I wouldn't cut him today but I have to ask Caldwell what he was thinking on this one (Aslo, is there a more useless role than 3rd string qb?- I'd rather have seen Nick Marshall take some snaps)

Quote: Joeckel had some really good blocks last night.... Not sure what you were watching. Allen is a 6th round rookie.... you really expect more than that in his first action? I thought he showed some promise.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS
Quote:Who stood out or made an impression to you? I missed the 1st half Bortles and Robinson is gonna be one of the best duos in the NFL Marqise Lee - He was playing with Henne and was impressive Yeldon, Ivory combo Miles Jack, Malik Jackson Nick Marshall coverage has to been good, he is gonna get Grartz and McCray cut

Jarrod Wilson had a nice play that was the same sort of thing he's been doing in those 7 on 7 drills in the red zone during practice.

He got away with one when they picked up the flag, but Wash was right there and immediately coached him on proper technique, but the kid is a thumper. We need Jack up to speed ASAP. Maybe those two will clean it up, but I'm not really going to hold my breath. We saw this a lot last year too. Both Telvin and Poz have a tendency to go for the run and allow a receiver to get behind them. Really like the combo of Yeldon and Ivory, because their styles are different. It kind of reminds me of Fred/MJD-lite. Yeldon is more patient and dances more before hitting the hole, whereas Ivory is one-cut go. He really didn't get a big hole in that TD run, but he just accelerated and found the endzone. That's a stuff from any of our backs last season, IMO. We show less advertisements to registered users. He's much better than Evans. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?"
Quote:I have the game DVR'd to watch tonight after work. You will be pleased with the starters, especially on offense. Allen Robinson was unstoppable. The running game was top-ten. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" Quote:He also made at least one other nice play that I remember. He's much better than Evans. With Peyton Thompson ahead of him on the depth chart, I wonder if he'll last on the P.S. Gipson/Thompson/Wilson More talent and depth that the Jags have seen at FS in a long time. Maybe ever. |
