Overanalyzing the Soft Spot

#61

It was pretty clear Telvin made a mental error on those plays.

It is hard to say who is a fault if you don't know what coverage was called.

To me though, it looks like the LB is releasing the guy to the next zone and no one is covering that zone.

Both plays the safety bites to the right to pick up a guy that is already being covered and leaving the deep left zone completely uncovered.

That makes me think the safety was confused as to what zone he was supposed to cover. He acts like there are two deep safeties and leaves that side of the field uncovered.

I don't think you can say the LB released too soon because there was no one covering that zone at all.

The question is, was the LB supposed to play man in that situation or was the safety covering the wrong zone?

It;s hard to say unless you know the assignments on the play.

Vic would always talk about the honey hole in the cover 2 as the area on the sideline between the corner and the safety. The honey hole in the cover 3 is in the seem between the linebacker and the safety.

Go Jags!
*To stay up for atleast 2 years 3/6/17
2016 draft players I think will be good
 • On the Fournette train, will be best back of his class 3/6/17
 • Lattimore please, Lockdowns on both sides would be nice
 • Engram at TE and the MJD clone Samaje Perine

This is where Jack helps this defense. Telvin and Poz are too run-key oriented. The return of Gipson and Jack on passing downs will take care of most of these.

Again for those who are asking about the coverage:

This is what Poz said about those 2 situations:

On second down, Fitzpatrick hit Enunwa for 26 yards (four YAC) when he got behind Posluszny and Smith. On the next play, Enunwa gained 43 yards (26 YAC) — Smith bit on Fitzpatrick’s eyes, who were on Powell; that step forward, allowed Enunwa to get behind Smith.

■ Posluszny on the two passes: “We were in our three-deep [coverage] and [Fitzpatrick] did a really good job of moving us off our landmarks with the way he was swinging his shoulders and looking off receivers. We’ll take a close look at it because it was the same thing twice.”

David Gerrard was on 1010XL Friday and he talked about "baiting" the linebacker to make him think the play would be in front of him. He referred to it as "biting the cheese" and said Telvin bit the cheese 2 consecutive plays.

Quote:I pointed out last year that Telvin is aweful in zone coverage.

On Madden...his zone coverage would be like a 56.

He is better in Man to man coverage.

The clip doesn't show Fitz, but by Telvin's reaction, it looks like he bit on a pump fake.

I hadn't read this post or heard this before my post, but that's what it looks like to me.

Hook, line, and sinker.

Or should that be stinker?

Its very entertaining reading the expert Madden coaches analyze the play. The linebackers just got moved out their assignment .. All they had to do was get enough depth and stay dicipline. You guys talking Quarters and Dimes. Those are just formations on Madden.. Its about the actual play.. Man to Man, Cover 2, 2 deep high, Single high, Cover 3, Cover 4.. Jags played a zone and got burnt.. They will learn from this.

Even more entertaining are fans criticizing play calls when they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Maybe it was a bad play call or maybe it was bad execution, either way hard to imagine quarters was the answer to anything in that situation.

To be honest, this soft spot on our d has been there since Gus has been here. It's a weakness of this cover 3.

No defense is perfect. Let's see if all the other problems from last few years have been resolved based on Caldwell's player acquisition.

Also, telvin did jump the underneath route, I'm not sure if that underneath stuff is his responsibility?

I honestly think it's just the problem with this type of zone that is the problem. But as I said, there is no defence that is unexploitable.

I'm not too worried, yet.

Preseason game #1 = no scheme and evaluate players and situations.

If this were a regular season game, I would be a whole lot more worried.

Dime and quarter are not just formations on madden. They have been used for years in the NFL when its obvious pass formations.

The problem isn't the terminology.

The problem is using it incorrectly, and not being able to tell what you're looking at when you see it. Just as those who can't easily see Telvin made a mistake and pull anything out of their rear to claim otherwise. You can really tell who has/has not played the game and spent time in a film room as soon as they open their mouths.

That's what he's laughing at, and has every right to. I similarly chuckle when I see folks blabber on about "techs" when they're just regurgitating what they hear on TV/radio with having little depth of understanding.

Quote:I totally agree! It's the LB's job to sit on the underneath routes. Can't tell who was playing strong safety but in both frames they bit (or guessed) instead of continuing their progression into the intermediate part of the field. If Gibson tries to make up for this, we are going to have problems. That would effectively take him out of his assigned area.

I swear to God I'm not being sarcastic when I say this j-dub but the comments you put on this thread are probably the most rational, well thought out comments that I've seen without any pettiness or any of the other stuff. I don't know if someone body snatched you or what you're doing different. I sincerely hope we see this jaguars woman this season. And please don't misconstrue this as in insult, I mean it in the best way possible.

Regardless if Telvin was out of position or not, I still dont think they should of had 2 LBs on the field when they just got burned for a big gain. Thats the reason their offense wasnt taking there time because they knew they could just spread them out and hit the D for a big gain. You dont have to be an NFL coach to see what the defense had on the field. Even if Telvin was in his assignment the advantage still went to the offense. Of course you think it was the right play or call as you always do. You have never questioned anything this franchise or coach has ever done, outside of McCray and Fowler. You have been blind as a bat in many instances.
